Anybody see some potential cap cuts here? I've bolded some players of interest - some of these numbers are simply ridiculous based on the level of production:

Schobel's cap hit is 9 MILLION??????? Kelsay's is 5 Million?

WTF? No wonder this team can't win. We're paying $1.56 million for each sack.

Also unless Parrish's number is wrong - I can definitely see him going bye bye if Hardy and/or Johnson have a good camp. No way we should be paying a #4 receiver more money than our #1 receiver. I hope Evans don't see this.

I would also dump Fowler and his 3.3 mil in a heartbeat and start Preston at center. No wonder he is big pimping with that kind of money being paid for mediorce at best play on the field.

He's number 4 receiver but also the top dog on our special team unit. Had a huge punt return average last year. You forget that not too long ago we had guys like Antonio Brown running backwards. Is 4 mil too much sure, but its not like we are dying because of cap space.

no but this team has a self imposed spending limit, and every player who is not performing up to their salary is a drain on resources. If we took $1 million each from Parrish, Reed, Schobel, Kelsay and Fowler to bring their salaries into a more reasonable range for their actual contributions, that's a big name FA or an extension for Evans or Crowell.

The teams that win aren't the ones that spend money wildly or the ones that don't pay anyone- they're the teams that pay players who put up big money.

Parrish was just re-signed to a new deal last year or during the season, I can't remember. But I doubt they would have done that if he was at risk of being cut. His numbers may not have been great, but Evans' were way down too. That's what happens when you can't get good qb play. This regime likes him, and he's a star on special teams. His numbers should improve too if we actually use his abilities on offense.

yes, by all means, let's cut Fowler and bring in a guy who will probably go on IR the first week of camp. As for Preston, I don't think they see him as starting material - in fact I'm pretty sure he'll be a camp cut this year.

I agree some of those other numbers are crazy, but I don't think there are a lot of proven options out there in FA to replace those guys like Parrish and we have no idea what Johnson will really be like.

You guys are hysterical...do you even pay atttention to the salary cap? Do you read anything Clump puts out there?

There are no such things as salary cap casualties any more. You can pay a player almost anything you want. There is so much money in the cap that you can keep anybody you want. You have to get pretty dumb with the cap to create "casualties". Moreover, the Bills are not on a self-imposed spending limit as far as the cap goes. They only shell out so much money per year. They structure contracts in a way where they are beneficial to the team without destroying the cap. The cost of some of the players. Overpaid? Some are but they have taken the philosophy to develop their own and use consistency instead of buying a team. You complain about Schoebl's cap hit. The only people in the country that ***** about his numbers are Bills fans. He's not Bruce Smith but that is the market. Withstanding all the injuries the defense hasn't been all bad. Finally, there is a MINIMUM salary cap. You have to pay somebody something to get to the minimum. In that scenario some players are going to be overpaid because in essence you are throwing money around like a drunken sailor - but that is the system; teams don't have a choice.

And some of the "highlighted" names. Really??? DO you watch the games? Moorman? Lindell? Fowler? What have Moorman and Lindell done to get canned? Fowler is average but who are you going to replace him with?

Yeah, yeah, I know. The Bills are cheap and don't want to win and didn't buy up every free agent so they suck and will suck forever.....

The complete joke is your take on things

I would be surprised if you can find another team who has more for less. Lots of teams have more, but not for less.

Many here need a serious awakening as to the going prices for players these days.

The ONLY part that I partly agree with is the amount of money that this says we have invested in our DE's. But with the drafting of Ellis, at least one may be headed for greener pastures... Hopefully its Denney.

Parrish was just extended, hes going no where.

They front-loaded Roscoe's new deal.

Next year (2009), his cap hit will be about $3 million.
In 2010 and 2011, it will be about $1.6 million for each season.

Even if he never catches another pass.....if he is still an elite punt returner at that time, he'll be a bargain.

I dont have an issue throwing money around, except that extensions are being given to the WRONG players, and for pathetic amounts...

------------

Here's what I wouldn't have done:

Why the hell did the Bills give Schobel that extension last year? He didn't need it, and he wasn't worth that much. Not to mention, the guy was already 30 years old!! Never give a player that old that much money.

Ryan Denney? Robert Royal? What a joke ... Royal never deserved that contract in the first place, and everyone knew it.

The same crap is happening now with Kyle Williams.

----------

What would I have done differently? I can tell you:

1. I would have given Jason Peters a lucrative contract extension instead of Aaron Schobel. Peters is very young, and still has great upside.

2. I would give Angelo Crowell the same contract as Kiwika Mitchell. It's fair market value, IMHO, and Crowell is valuable to our team.

3. Pay Lee Evans. Again, throwing money around is fine, as long as we give it to young players with upside, who are valuable to our team. Lee Evans is one of those players.

4. They should have extended John McCargo BEFORE extending Kyle Williams. The Bills threw too much money at a rotational player in Williams. You know its true, when even Kyle Williams himself was shocked at the contract.

5. We should've drafted a Center already! Finding a decent one in the draft is not that difficult, and that player would have been a lot cheaper than Melvin Fowler. It's not uncommon for Centers to start in their rookie year.

6. I think the Derrick Dockery, Brad Butler, and Kiwika Mitchell contracts were excellent. I think Josh Reed and Chris Kelsay's contracts were okay, and I wont complain about them.

I think Parrish's contract was a little more secure before we drafted McKelvin.

If McKelvin takes some of those punts, your looking at a pretty expensive #4. Especially when the Bills are probably itching to keep Johnson and Jenkins on the roster.

The thought never even crossed my mind til right now, and there always is a surprise cut or two. I wouldn't even really care if it translated into a Crowell, Evens, and Peters extension.

I prefer keeping him, and IMO Peters can wait until next year. Parrish's contract is much easier to swallow after looking at what Sal pointed out. I mean after all, Jenkins can carry Josh Scobey's place as Bobby Aprils one pick.

A few notes:

They did extend Peters before last year. Now that he has a Pro Bowl under his belt he wants more money. It was not a choice per se.

They are working on Evans and Crowell and it would not shock me to see them extend McCargo too. Just because Williams (or anybody) signs first does not mean a deal is not in the works.

And drafting a center is a great idea - except this was not a great year for centers and drafting a position need in the 3rd round and beyond is sily.

really? "they only shell out so much per year" and that amount is LESS than the amount the cap allows them to shell out. So how is that NOT a self imposed spending limit?

As far as Schobel, of course Bills fans are the only ones who *****- they're the only ones who care and the only ones who pay attention. Schobel's making almost $1.5 million PER SACK. That's insane.

As far as the defense not being that bad- they were 30TH IN THE NFL. Injuries or not, that's terrible. Every team has injuries. But, at least they did something to fix the D this year.

You are only looking at Schobel for one year. While I have bashed him in the past, he is 3rd in the NFL for sacks since 2004. He is nto a terrible player.

As for the sending limit, this has been explained countless times - It is like a credit card. You limit your money per year, but in the long run it is all the same. You give a roster bonus instead of a signing bonus.

Well, first of all, Schobel's only had that monster contract for 1 year and he didn't live up to it. Second, I am looking at his whole career. Many of his sacks come at garbage time and he disappears for weeks at a time. Every time I quote stats on here for someone like Whitner, everyone says "well the stats don't tell the whole story." The same logic can go in the other direction as well. Schobel's numbers for 04-06 are inflated and dont' tell the full story.

Giving roster bonuses instead of signing bonuses makes all the money count against THIS year, which may be good for future planning but doesn't help us win now. And if it still leads to guys like Schobel eating up 9 million in cap space, what good is it?

It is good because it allows the team to FA shopping every year so they can sign Dockery and Walker one year and then sign Mitchell and Stroud (trade) the next year while also extending their own young players.

And I agree on Schobel - He has gone from being over-rated by fans to being under-rated. He still generates pressure though and is not the scourge of society some say he is.

Kind of off topic: I think you can absolutely draft for need in the third. Why draft a guy that will be buried in the depth chart until his rookie contract expires when you can draft a starter?

Drafting best player available is just something GMs say to not insult the player they already have.

But, there weren't many/any good centers this year.

they are paying 17+ million this year for 3 average DE's... they could get 1 beast and 1 average guy for that price. wise spending.

5 million for a josh reed and robert royal. what a steal. dump both of these guys and bring in a legit TE. i've had enough of seeing what these guys can't do.

let me guess...everytime you have an off year you voluntarily go to your company and ask for your salary to be decreased to that of a sucky worker.

no, if I have an entire off-year I'll get fired. Unlike the Buffalo Bills, most private companies don't give people infinite chances. And most private companies wouldn't be dumb enough to pay me $300k for my performance level because what I do doesn't justify a 300k salary.

You know what? numbers show the stupidity and also the fear factor of losing FA's to other teams. We have to overpay to keep people in this town because our team has been a joke. But to overpay for these backups and should be backups is rediculous.

I think people should be picketing out on one bills drive when the season comes and we haven't extended Peters, Evans, or Crowell.

Lets see...would we rather have Schobel and Kelsay over Peters and Evans? I sure as hell wouldn't. I'd rather have Crowell over Melvin Fowler.

If you watch ANY GAME and pay attention to Fowler you will see he is one of the main reasons why our RUN GAME SUCKS ASS. He's knocked back INTO Lynch on SO many occasions its embarrassing that Fowler even has a job on this team.

Our biggest liabilities are among the highest paid on this entire team - yet some people on this board think there is nothing wrong with that.

Maybe it's just me - but paying $17 million for 3 pass rushers that are all average at best and horrible against the run is mind boggling. Also for 3.3 mil we could have a lot better center than Fowler.

Funny part is, we have our starting QB, starting RB, MLB, CB, FS, 2nd WR are making peanuts relative to these guys. All these blunders of overpaying for our most mediocre players will come back to haunt us when we need to actually lock up our proven young players. I hope the time that happens Fowler, Denney, Kelsay, and Schobel will be long gone.

dude, go look up ANY thread where I have posted anything good about JP Losman except for him doing the Clean Up Buffalo thing. I think he sucks.

As for saying Edwards is our starting QB, look at the depth chart, he is. I wasn't saying "Oh he's hand down our starting QB."

Leave it up to you to make a salary cap thread about the whole team and turn it into a JP issue.

I don't know- that's not my job.

But lack of a better option doesn't change the fact that Fowler sucks and is overpaid. If he doesn't get replaced, we're just going to have to deal with a ****ty running game and more losses.

People are confusing two questions: "Is this team good enough to win?" and "How do you make this team better?" Many people here defend the FO by saying they didn't have any alternatives, and sometimes those people are right. But then it goes back to the first question and the answer is still "No."

It may not be your job but you complain about it. Without viable alternative there is no reason to constantly complain...is he overpaid? Probably. But the fact remains that teams must spend a minimum amount of salary cap money...people will be overpaid...get used to it.

Dockery is overpaid too. Evans will be if extended. So will Peters and Crowell. So is Stroud and Mitchell.

If the Bills did not overpay any players they would really really suck and win 2 or 3 games a year.

If Evans puts up the numbers he had in 2006 and Peters continues to play at the Pro Bowl, I have no problem with them being overpaid. All the guys you mentioned have contributed to our team in some way at some point (except Stroud and Mitchell since theyr'e new, obviously). Fowler has been useless.

The teams that win are the guys that pay the players who produce. I have no problem with a guy counting $6 million or $8 million against the cap if he contributes. I have a HUGE problem with guys counting $3 million or $4 million or $5 million against the cap for no results whatsoever. We're paying the wrong guys and that's why they're not winning.

Did you even read the rest of my post?

Without viable alternatives, we're LOSING- that's plenty of reason for any sports fan to complain. There's nothing else they could do? So what? That doesn't make us any better on the field on Sunday afternoons. And as long as we're losing, anyone who's a fan should be complaining because, by definition, fans want the team to win.

You are shouting into the wind...you just don't get it.

1. Name who would be a better center.
2. Explain how you don't overpay somebody that sucks when you have to spend a minimum amount of money.

IF you can't do that than the complaining is for naught...regardless if any of us agree with you or not.

1. Other teams have centers a lot better than Fowler, so if other teams can find them, why can't our FO? Unfortunately I have a real job and don't have time to study FA's and scouting reports and trade values to figure it out. But our FO makes big bucks to do just that, and right now they're getting showed up by the rest of the NFL that's doing it better.
2. I didn't say "don't overpay anybody." I said "overpay the right people" $3 million to Fowler who should be making $1 million max is $2 million we don't have to extend Evans, Crowell, etc. If we have to overpay people, I'd rather overpay guys who PERFORM like Crowell and Evans to make sure they stay. And I'm not even a huge fan of Crowell, but at least he contributes much more than Fowler and I'd much rather see him pocketing the extra change if we have to overpay someone.

And if we're losing while other teams are winning, the complaining is not naught. First, fans want the team to win and have a right to complain when we're not. Second, other teams are finding ways to win so saying "there are no other options" is a cop out- if other teams can do it, then our FO has no excuses.

THERE'S TRUTH TO THAT.. Some players are in bad years(for us) w/ their contracts..

--Im aware of Denney & Kelsays numbers. I like both.

Walker, Langston OL 6,006,720
wtf! Is he any good? i just dunno. I admit i never followed him once last season. Maybe that is a good sign..eh?

Look how much money we have left cash -to- cap.. i NO LONGER CARE AT ALL ABOUT our spending.. Im very happy we kept Schobel,Denney,Reed,Kyle etc etc. Although we did OVERSPEND. I know we did, And im not saying tehse players are even elite at all, just players we drafted who i like them to stay. Like the depth Denney provides when he moves Kelsay inside on passing 3rd downs etc..

--Another angle-- Is it ***** & dumpy these numbers because the Ralph is only gonna spend SO-MUCH & we have it tied up in mediocrity? I can agree with that if some see it that way.....
