There's a heavy Original Six flavour to the Detroit Red Wings nine-game pre-season schedule released Thursday.

Montreal, Toronto and Boston will all be paying visits to the Joe Louis Arena along with the Atlanta Thrashers and Buffalo Sabres.

The Canadiens will open the Wings' schedule with a visit Sept. 24 (7:30 p.m.) followed by the Bruins (7:30 p.m., Sept. 26), Thrashers (5 p.m., Sept. 28), Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m., Oct. 3) and Buffalo (5 p.m., Oct.5).

Though the regular season schedule won't be released until Wednesday, Wings officials confirmed they'll open the season at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs Oct. 9.

preseason is going long this year Oct 5th is usually opening night.

every team in the league will play all the others at least once next season.

Six games against division teams (three home games, three road games, 24 games total)
Four games against same conference other teams (two home, two road, 40 games total)
A total of 18 games against other conference teams (nine home, nine road) with at least one game against each of the 15 teams.

If you would have just titled this "NHL schedule release on 7/16" I might not have not known it involved the sabres too

Yay, time to find out when the two games I get to go to are. Detroit at home vs. Toronto is odd, would have expected it to be against Anaheim. Usually the Cup winners raise the banner against the team they beat in the conference finals... I know, I saw it happen :(

Then wouldn't they play Dallas?

I just hope that the NHL doesn't have the Sabres opening up with the Islanders again it seems like evey year the Sabres have to open the season with the Islanders. Last year the Sabres had to play the Islanders in back to back games.

Why does that matter? I would rather start with a cream puff team to boost our confidence starting the season.

I was too busy trying to figure out how to spend all my winnings from previous Playoff Prediction challenges...

I could honestly care less who they open up against. This isn't football where they only play the 16 games. They are going to play every team anyways so why does it matter who they open up against?

I am willing to bet they open up on the road though.

2003-04 Islanders (H)
2005-06 Islanders (H)
2006-07 Hurricanes (A)
2007-08 Islanders (home & home)
2008-09 ??? Bruins ???
The Sabres played them on the final day of the regular season at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston last year and beat them 3-0 Thomas Vanek getting the hat trick. I wouldn't be surprised that it would be the Bruins here at the HSBC Arena to open the season.

working at the arena it will be nice seeing a bigger variety of teams come to HSBC and play. the one big thing i am going to miss this season is the entire arena yelling:
