The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that when GM Phil Savage returns from vacation that he'll resume his efforts to land a veteran cornerback by trade for his roster after finding themselves shorthanded due to season-ending injuries.

Here's the paragraph that explains the approach.

There has been some groundwork laid, but the few teams involved want to gauge other positions on their rosters in the first week or two of camp before trading a cornerback.

Ashton Youboty was a player mentioned by the Plain Dealer as a possible option for the Browns back in the spring since his former defensive backs coach at Ohio State (Mel Tucker) is now the defensive coordinator for the Browns.

The Bills do have to see how things play out at the position after adding a veteran (Will James) and three draft picks to their cornerback mix, so it wouldn't be a big surprise if Buffalo was one of those teams to which the Plain Dealer refers.

Clayton just mentioned this, too.

Q: Hey John, with the Browns revamping the defensive line, will they still need another starting-caliber cornerback to be efficient.

Tom in Canton, Ohio

A: I think they could use two additional corners. They head into the season with Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald as their starting corners; both were rookies last season. McDonald was a pleasant surprise as a No. 3 corner in the second half of last season, but going to No. 2 is a big jump. General manager Phil Savage will make one or two moves before the start of the season. I'm betting that he'll pick up Ashton Youboty from the Bills in late August.
