View Full Version : Question Question #7: Who are the training camp sleepers?

They pop up every summer in early August. Players who came into training camp under the radar, but quickly make a name for themselves based on their unexpected play or consistency. With fewer starting roles up for grabs this season as opposed to the past couple of years, it figures to be harder for some 'sleepers' to go as far as seeing regular time on the field. But there is a handful of players that could still sneak up on a veteran and take a spot on the 53-man roster.

Sometimes I wish Brown would just say"sorry everyone, nothing worthwhile to wwrite today, try back tommorow" instead of that article.

Besides the guys on Brown's list (especially Omon, Buggs and Felton), I will be watching OT Demetrius Bell, DT Teraz McCray, WR Steve Johnson, TE Derek Fine, LB Jon Banks, DE Chris Ellis and S John Wendling.

I think WR Johnson, TE Fine and DE Ellis will be the top 3 to gain quick visibility if they show anything in TC. All 3 could easily enter the roster as we are weak at all 3 positions and in severe need of a playmaker!

I think that Fine is an absolute lock to make the team - barring season ending injury.

I have a great interest in watching Ellis.

I'm not sure if he's the guy, and I'm not sure if success from a third rounder would qualify as a sleeper, but I think he is one of those guys who is more suited to the pro level than college, and I'm really, really hoping that we can get a legit pass rusher on the left side.

Additionally, I don't want to read press reports of what is going on in camp as they are largely coach-speak.

I want to see an offense in preseason games, and a significantly improved defense.

I have heard all of the crap before about not game planning. I want to see athletic dominance.

I will take a great interest in S John Wendling and Ko Simpson.

After reading the brief bio of Christian Gaddis, he is an interesting case. I did not pay much attention to him last year.

He is built low to the ground - 6'1" and 300 pounds.

He has an interesting athletic background: besides playing defense on his highschool football team, he played basketball and lacrosse! The team called him up to the active roster last year and he was game-day active for the final week. He was, effectively, the #9 or #10 guy on the offensive line depth chart last year.

I am not saying that he will make the team, but he will be an interesting player to watch at center since his competition is not that stellar. Plus, with his versatility of having played defense in his career, he could be a pretty good special teams guy. He could replace Preston - a player who has been disappointing or Fowler if he has trouble coming back from injury.

Stevie Johnson, I think this kid is going to go down as "the steal" of this past draft.

"Dwayne Wrighthttp://www.buffalobills.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=6221#) - No one might be more under the radar than Dwayne Wright. Considered by many to be little more than a short yardage option, Wright is a one cut pile driver that showed improved burst through the hole this spring. Anxious to make more of an impact on offense Wright is also an agile receiver out of the backfield, and talk of his possible demise because of the selection of Xavier Omonhttp://www.buffalobills.com/images/relatedicon.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=6221#) this spring is way off base."

Way off base?

Here is my guess, depth and all.......here (http://www.billszone.com/fanzone/showthread.php?t=155784).

I do have to add Omon, Felton, Gaddis, Buggs, Schouman, Fine, Wright or even Felton could make the team without knocking off a vet. And by vet, I mean someone on an NFL roster for 16 games.
