But, as to your point, they did learn a lesson.

Since that happened they have signed Hecht, Roy, Vanek (not entirely by choice), Miller, and Gaustad to long term deals. They also wisely did NOT over-react by signing the over-rated and way overpaid Campbell long term.

That has been kinda part of my point recently - sure they messed up by not getting one of the two signed up. But they learned and it was over a year ago. The keep using that as a basis for bashing is in the past.

As for the money, it is catch-22. Insane money is needed to keep guys here.

Now, if they extend Pominville next I will be very happy.

I don't care how much money they gave him. I'm just glad it got done. It appears that Tom and Larry learned from their horrible mistakes a couple years ago when they didn't extend either of the captains. Nice to see they are keeping their best guys now.

the basis for bashing will be the past when the team recovers from those mistakes and starts winning again. They've learned their lesson in the sense that they're not repeating the same mistakes, but we're still paying the price from the initial mistakes on the ice.

He is above average but I will agree he is not Elite. You have to factor in that the Sabres play a run and gun offensive game. Put him on a team like the Devils or the wild and he would have top level stats.

The Sabres HAD to extend him. There were no other options.
