(April 23, 2003) -- On either side of his right forearm, Willis McGahee has tattoos of "theater masks," the kind you might find on Masterpiece Theatre. One's smiling and one's frowning -- except they're really animated, like a clown, but not a Ringling Bros. clown; more like a diabolical-looking, "evil" clown. On one side, a ghoulish face is grinning with the words "the good" above its head. On the other, a sinister face snarls with "the bad."

He may have "the good" and "the bad," but the 2003 Fiesta Bowl was definitely "the ugly." When he woke up Jan. 4, McGahee was a top-three NFL draft pick. Who knows if he ever went to sleep that night, but if he did, he was, at that point, far from the top.

The past
It was the fourth quarter of the National Championship Game in Tempe, Ariz. The Miami Hurricanes, looking for consecutive win No. 35 and back-to-back national titles, were hustling downfield into Ohio State territory. The clock read 11:39 left in the game. The down was third with 10 yards to convert. The play was a screen pass from Ken Dorsey to McGahee. That's when Will Allen's aim changed everything.
