Training Camp Practice Report: Aug 6

It was a welcome sight for Bills fans in attendance as well as the offensive coaching staff as second-round pick James Hardy was back participating fully in practice Wednesday. Out since last Thursday when he tweaked his left hamstring, Hardy was thrilled to get back to work. "It felt great. It's been sort of depressing on that sideline watching everybody, but now that I'm able to get back involved it's just a great feeling," Hardy said. "Hopefully tomorrow it won't be as sore and I'll be able to do the same thing."
"We worked him in slowly the last couple of practices, so he went through individual and then today we just kind of let him go," said head coach Dick Jauron. "I would venture to guess it's going to be a little bit sore, but we'll see how he tolerated this practice. It was really good to get him back."
Hardy got reps with the first team offense for most of the practice during team work as Lee Evans was given a lighter workload Wednesday by the staff. Early in 7-on-7 he made a nice reception on a crossing pattern, catching the ball in stride and heading up field. He made a few other short receptions as well, but Hardy didn't want to push it too much.
"I have to be smart," he said. "I can't come in and just do every route and do every play. They told me to be smart about it. I know my body and just tell them when I feel something. I made it through most of the practice."
Despite his frustration when he was sidelined with the injury, Hardy said he was able to maintain his focus mentally on his assignments in the offense.
"I definitely was in my book a lot more and stayed up later knowing I wouldn't be able to practice," said Hardy. "I still just tried to get mental reps and do exactly what I can do when I was not playing so when I came back I'd be ready to just jump back into it."
The extra study appears to have paid off as Hardy stated that he felt faster and more elusive out on the field as he was getting through his routes more efficiently.
Jauron and the staff have not yet decided on whether Hardy will play in Saturday's preseason opener against Washington. A lot will depend on how the tall receiver feels Thursday morning and whether he can practice again Thursday night.
Also back was veteran cornerback Will James who missed the past few days with a groin injury. He also got team work, but did not go through the entire workout. How his injury reacts to the activity Wednesday will go a long way in determining his status for Saturday as well.
    Injury update
Even though Hardy was back two other receivers were down in Josh Reed and Scott Mayle. Reed is still dealing with a lower back strain while Mayle is suffering from a strained hamstring.
"Scott's (injury) is a hamstring," said Jauron. "(Head athletic trainer) Bud (Carpenter) wouldn't project past today, so there's a little optimism there."
Donte Whitner also didn't practice. Jauron addressed Whitner and Josh Reed's status for Saturday's preseason game.
Also sitting Wednesday was defensive end Copeland Bryan (hamstring) and Matt Baker (groin).
    Highlights
Roscoe Parrish got in on the action early making an acrobatic bobbling catch on the far sideline and a few plays later in 7-on-7 made a nice grab down the near sideline on a throw from Trent Edwards for a 25-yard gain.
Leodis McKelvin, who got some first team reps at left cornerback with Terrence McGee receiving a lighter workload from the staff, forced a fumble on a catch that was made by Derek Fine.
Justin Jenkins and Leodis McKelvin had the best one-on-one battle on a pass from Trent Edwards. It initially looked like McKelvin would get his first interception of camp, but Jenkins also got two hands on the ball. The two wrestled for it after they both hit the ground with Jenkins ultimately winding up with the ball.
John DiGiorgio and George Wilson teamed up for the best run fit of the day as they stopped Xavier Omon right at the line of scrimmage.
Ashton Youboty made his third interception of camp on a pass from J.P. Losman that was tipped, it appeared, by both linebacker Donnie Spragan and tight end Courtney Anderson.

    QUARTERBACK TRENT EDWARDS - 8/6

    QUARTERBACK TRENT EDWARDS
    PM Practice – August 6, 2008

On the preparation for the game against Washington:
I’m getting pretty excited. We’re going against the same defense over and over these days, and they’re kind of ready to hit someone new, and I think that’s the way the rest of the offense feels. We’re going to start implementing some of our game plan this week, these next couple days, and hopefully we can come out good on Saturday.

On how some of the younger receivers are progressing:
Josh (Reed) is a little dinged up right now so we need the other guys to step up, it’s going to happen during the season, we’re going to need those young guys that are getting a lot of time right now to perform during the season. Hopefully, getting a look at some things right now during training camp, that’ll help if Josh were to go down this year.

On how much playing time he expects to get against Washington:
I have not heard anything yet, so I’m just going to be ready to go, whatever they need me to do. I’m going to be ready to go on Saturday, and understand the game plan, and get the ball down the field.

On what he hopes to get from the first preseason game:
I’m looking to try to get back in a game situation, putting on a game jersey, and getting back into the flow of things, seeing a lot of different coverages, a lot of things that we haven‘t seen yet so far in camp, and a lot of different looks that we have to get used to in the regular season.

On getting hit for the first time in the preseason:
It’s an adjustment, but once that first hit goes down, you’re back in the swing of things, you’re a football player, you don’t have that red jersey on anymore and you have to be ready to go. Put your mouthpiece in, strap up your chin strap and be ready to go.

On how he and Coach Schonert work together:
I think we’ll talk briefly about that and more so during the season, to get on the same page about that. In the preseason, we’re trying to run some pretty basic stuff, and make sure we’re understanding the initial foundation of our offense. We’re going to get these first plays down and go from there.

On adding the tight end to the offense this year:
We have playmakers at tight end, we have to get the ball to Rob (Royal), Derek (Schouman), all of those guys. They’re good, all of those guys. We’re going to call their plays, and when their plays are called, we have to make sure to get them the ball.

On the changes with Turk Schonert as offensive coordinator:
Just some paces on the offense. We’ll get through some different looks, just in terms of some different formations and shifts that you didn’t see last year, we might mix in some things that you won’t see a lot of. We’ll be able to see more on Saturday, once we get it going.

On looking to develop more of a vertical passing game:
I need to work on all of that. I need to face different coverages, I need to face an opposing team, and that’s what I’m looking to get out of Saturday. We need to get the ball down the field, convert on third down, get some first downs, keep moving the chains and put some points on the board.

On working the tight ends in more this year:
Throughout the year last year, we tried to get them the ball, I think the Dolphins game, Rob (Royal) had a couple touchdown passes. Getting them the ball, that opens up everything.

      Coach Dick Jauron
      PM Practice – August 6, 2008

      On Hardy back in action:
It was good to have him back, we worked him in slowly the last couple of practices doing individuals and today we let him go. I would venture to guess that it would be a little sore and we will see how he tolerated it this practice. It was really good to get him back.

On Hardy and other injured players not playing on Saturday:
I would say that Donte (Whitner) and Josh (Reed) are a long shot. Hopefully James (Hardy) depending on how he came out of this practice and see what happens in the next couple of days, but I would be very doubtful about Donte and Josh.

On your primary goals for Saturday’s game:
Well first of all it’s a scrimmage, a full contact scrimmage in every area. The kicking game, offensively and defensively so we will get to see them scrimmage, we use it as such. We have a long preseason and we have time to get our guys ready and we try to use it all, so that is one thing and then we will get to see guys under the big lights. We will get to see guys we haven’t seen at this level, in an NFL exhibition game, which is different than a regular season game, but it’s probably as fast as any game they will ever play so we get to see the young guys in that situation.

On injuries of Baker and Mayle:
With Matt (Baker) we think it is a groin and we are just going to have to wait, he did a little today in our earlier walk-thru and obviously hardly did anything in this practice. Scott (Mayle) is a hamstring and Bud wouldn’t project passed today so there is a little optimism there, but you know how hamstrings are for anybody particularly for those skill people.

On backing off Lee and Terrence:
I am just backing them off a little bit.

On quarterback rotation for Saturday’s game:
We will sit down and talk when we get closer to that.

      On Donte’s injury:
I can’t really talk about the technical terms, but Bud doesn’t seem overly concerned he thinks it will come around pretty quickly and doesn’t think it will be a problem, so we will see.

On Ko (Simpson) adapting to being back on the field:
He has done well, he has come back and worked hard. He had that minor setback which scared him a little bit and we go into an exhibition game which is full contact so we will learn a lot more. Everybody that goes through it is a little bit cautious as they work their way back in.

On what Derek Schouman has done so far:
He is a very smart player in terms of learning this game. He is a very aware player on the field, he plays in all areas of our offense, tight end position, fullback, and special teams. We believe he is just a solid football player, a guy you can depend on.

On assessing the tight end competition so far:
We will know a little bit more after this game, I really like those guys and I am confident in them, but they have to produce, we have to see it on the field. We will learn a good deal more on Saturday and then we will go from there.

On Marcus Buggs catching your eye at all:
When we scrimmaged the young guys he made a couple of tackles, he is very aggressive, he is aggressive in our special teams drills on a daily basis. He is obviously not a tall linebacker or a giant linebacker, he is very quick has a low center of gravity so he is hard to knock of his feet. He has a lot of things going for him and he will get a chance to perform on special teams during the game on Saturday. It is a very competitive position and we will see where it goes for him, we try to explain to him they are not only competing for jobs on this team but for jobs in the league. If they show up anywhere on the field and by that I mean defensively or on special teams there are thirty-one other teams that will take notice. You go down and make a play on a kickoff they will all take notice so it’s a real opportunity.

      On J.P’s throwing:
He has seemed to be throwing the ball well, but the thumb is sore and will probably remain sore for awhile longer. He gets treatment on it every day, but it is slightly sore so it has its effects.

If any more evidence is needed that anything players say publicly should be taken with a large sack of salt, it's calling Royal a "playmaker."

I'm not a huge Royal fan by any stretch, but my understanding is that he played with an injury virtually all of last season that significantly affected his play. I'm willing to wait and see what he does this season. He was more effective in 2006 than he was in 2007, and that seems as if due to his injury.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

Royal had career highs in catches and yards last year, and the same number of TDs as in 2006.

I remember a ball Royal didnt catch in 2006. He's no playmaker by any means. At work we have a saying, which fits well with Trent's comments. "Making chicken salad out of chicken ****". poyfect!

I was at camp today and Schouman looked like a Starting TE, playing with the 1st unit.

He's miles ahead of the other TE's in ability & talent. That includes Royal.

That is good to hear from Hardy. I have a feeling he will play, and get good rep.

                  McKelvin over McGee? Why?

Has Copeland Bryan ever played a down for us? Seems like the guy's permanently on the injury list.
