Why are drafts exciting?

After all, no matter who goes first overall or who slides into the second half of the first round, you’re not going to see a dime of that money, and neither am I. When we wake up Monday morning, we’re still going to have to drag our carcasses out of bed, stumble to the shower, comb our fangs, get into our car and fight traffic to begin our work week. Meanwhile, there will be a whole bunch of new millionaires whose toughest problem Monday morning will be getting to the airport in time to get to their new city, where they will be treated like incoming royalty despite never doing a thing for that city just yet.

It’s not fair, but it is fun.

Doesn’t it seem odd that hearing people’s names called for hours on end can be riveting for a football fan? Don’t you have better things to do on an April weekend than listen to the ESPN gang announce the Titans’ fifth-round pick, a player who will provide depth at both offensive guard positions and who comes from a school you didn’t know existed? Or maybe you will get some fresh air and not actually watch the draft, but you’ll still be interested by who was selected and get a feeling of either hope or despair — there really isn’t an in-between after the draft — for how your favorite team fares.
