NEW YORK (April 25, 2003) -- Now he waits.

And wonders.

And guesses.

These are exciting times for Byron Leftwich. They also are uncertain times -- uncertain and, though his easy-going demeanor doesn't reflect as much, probably a little bit maddening as well.

"The fun part is that you have no idea where you're going, but the tough part is that you don't know where you're going," the former Marshall University quarterback said with a smile during the NFL's annual pre-draft luncheon with the national media at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers overlooking the Hudson River. "I'm expecting anything. Nothing will surprise me.

"You've got to keep an open mind and be prepared for anything."

What Leftwich knows for sure is that he won't be the top overall pick when the draft begins; Carson Palmer has that distinction, which came with the contract he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. Not surprisingly, Palmer easily was the most relaxed of the seven highly rated prospects that attended the luncheon.

What no one seems to know is where Leftwich will be selected, which makes him perhaps the most intriguing mystery surrounding the draft, or at least the first round.

For the longest time, Leftwich and Palmer have been mentioned as the two best quarterbacks in this year's college crop. Before the Bengals made their intentions known with Palmer, Leftwich thought he had a realistic chance of being the first choice because they had him on their short list of candidates
