View Full Version : How Cheap Is Ralph?; NFL Head Coach Salaries

Here's a list of the head coaches in the NFL and their approximate salaries this season:

Some interesting things to note: Jack Del Rio, Mike Tomlin, are paid only $1 million more than Jauron and they both have winning coaching records to date. Wade Phillips is paid double what Jauron makes.

Keep in mind...while $1 million dollars more for a coaches salary might seem like nothing, it means a big jump when the highest paid is only $8 million.

Seems as if it only takes about $3 million to wrangle in a good head coach. But at the same time, I see on this list a HELL of a lot of overpaid unproven coaches. So I think what Jauron makes is relative to his past experience, but it's time to go out and get someone who is proven if Jauron doesn't work out this season.

BTW, another stat that might be interesting for some people, Jauron is the 23th winningest coach currently in the NFL to date with a .427

Rather than call Ralph cheap.

Does anyone think its a coincidence that the lowest paid teams are pretty much all leading perennial non-playoff/loser teams?

Yeah? And?

exactly... you're *****ing about us being cheap on HC's and Jaurons winning record

you thread is called Ralph is cheap, and yet Marv is the one who brought us Jauron.

Marv preferred Jauron for the characteristics he brought to the team, and he saw similiarties in Jauron to himslef.

What the hell is the point of your thread? I've yet to find one

Don't see it.

KC was good for many years.
Pitts and Jax have been very good.

Has Seattle gotten what they paid for? Tenn, Chi?? Is Shanny still worth what he is being paid by Denver?

You logic is flawed.

Dick was not Ralphy's choice. He was Marv's.

Ralph is soo cheap he's overpaying guys like Dockery, Walker , Kelsay ,Schobel.

Jack Del Rio, Mike Tomlin, are paid only $1 million more than Jauron and they both have winning coaching records to date.

I can believe the number for Tomlin, because he was a unproven rookie HC a year ago and is working off his first contract.

Del Rio is making more though though. Del Rio just signed a extension (http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/040408/spf_264875408.shtml/) last April that will pay him $5M annually from 2009-2012. His salary for the current season remains $3.5M, and the $2.5M figure comes from what he made in 2007.

it could also have something to do with the fact that the bottom paid coaches have been with their teams a relatively short period of time. again, this is somewhat due to the poor performance of some teams, as they have cycled through coaches:

Ken Whisenhunt - 1 year
Jack Del Rio - 5 years
Mike Tomlin - 1 year
Scott Linehan - 2 years
Herm Edwards - 2 years
Romeo Crennel - 3 years
Rod Marinelli - 1 year
DJ - 2 years
Brad Childress - 2 years
Lane Kiffin - 1 year

For an average of: 2 years.

So the difference between the top paid coaches and the bottom paid coaches seems pretty simple: your team needs to be solid enough for you to stay in the position for more than a couple years.

(On a side note, who is willing to bet Del Rio gets a hefty hike within the year?)

exactly... you're *****ing about us being cheap on HC's and Jaurons winning record

you thread is called Ralph is cheap, and yet Marv is the one who brought us Jauron.

Marv preferred Jauron for the characteristics he brought to the team, and he saw similiarties in Jauron to himslef.

What the hell is the point of your thread? I've yet to find one
I guess to people like you, placing the facts out there is called "*****ing". I just put two spreadsheets on the thread. Someone seems to have a hidden agenda to be so perturbed by facts. Actually if you wouldve asked me what Jaurons win/loss percentage would be, I wouldve thought he wouldve ranked lower than 23rd.

BTW, learn how to read. I didnt call this thread "Ralph is cheap" its called "How Cheap Is Ralph?" Its a question to initiate discussion on a *GASP* MESSAGE BOARD. If you dont like it, step off, buddy.

it could also have something to do with the fact that the bottom paid coaches have been with their teams a relatively short period of time. again, this is somewhat due to the poor performance of some teams, as they have cycled through coaches:

Rod Marinelli - 1 year

For an average of: 2 years.

So the difference between the top paid coaches and the bottom paid coaches seems pretty simple: your team needs to be solid enough for you to stay in the position for more than a couple years.

(On a side note, who is willing to bet Del Rio gets a hefty hike within the year?)
don't confuse the issue with math...

Actually, the real difference is all those coaches besides Edwards and Jauron are on their first NFL jobs, so you would expect them to make less.

Del Rio doesn't belong there. He made $2.5M in 2007, but will make $3.5M in 2008 and $5M annually for 2009-2012.

Edwards may have made $2M in 2007, because the Chiefs actually traded to sign him. He was scheduled to make $2M in his last year with the Jets. After going to KC he signed a 4-year/$12M deal.

So Jauron is really the only guy among the lowest paid coaches who isn't on his first job.

true, but as you mentioned, coaches salaries generally go up as they stay longer, so these guys who are newer to the NFL will also be making more cash the longer they stick with their respective teams.

Im sure you include me in your “negative crowd” but let me assure you; overall I’m very high on the Bills. If they lock up Evans and Crowell, and Peters eventually gets satisfied I can truthfully say I don’t care if we sign a single free agent next year; just give me another good rookie or two and this team is a contender.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

this is exactly the point some of us have been making for years about RW being cheap. The Cap is determining the player salaries and there is sharing to compensate for that...so the true indicator of financial committment to being successful in the NFL is the coaching and this is why we have had coaches with zero experience for the past decade. Jauron is the first guy we've had here with any head coaching experience actually and he is working cheap.

OpIv37

exactly... you're *****ing about us being cheap on HC's and Jaurons winning record

you thread is called Ralph is cheap, and yet Marv is the one who brought us Jauron.

Marv preferred Jauron for the characteristics he brought to the team, and he saw similiarties in Jauron to himslef.

What the hell is the point of your thread? I've yet to find one

did it ever occur to you that Ralph gave Marv a budget and Jauron was the best Marv could do within that budget? That's usually how it works.

Wallow in it? In the past, there hasn't been much positive. I made a thread based on discussions of how Ralph is cheap and "look at how cheap he is on hiring coaches!" so I went and dug up the facts and figures and posted them. if anyones being negative here it's you jumping down my throat for creating a discussion.

no one forced you to read this thread, no ones forcing you not to put me on ignore, I think this is very middle of the road in "negativity" standards for a thread. i mean, go back to reading the 50 Peters threads or 1,000 JP vs. Trent threads. If you got something positive to talk about then go do it man. I'm high on this team right now, but one thing I've never been high on is the owner. how anyone could be cool with Ralph Wilson after his speech in Toronto earlier this year has his blinders on hardcore.

Mike Shanahan - Perenial contender
Jeff Fischer - Tenure
Lovey Smith - Super bowl appearence
Bill Billechick - Cheats better them all them others
Tony Dungy - Super bowl champion... Always near top in AFC
Tom Coughlin - Super bowl champion
Jon Gruden - Didn't he win a Super bowl too!
Andy Reid - How many NFC championships?
John Fox - I dunno

Look, I'll give the Bills a pass on this one. The year we were hiring, Jauron was by far the best available and not worth anymore than we are paying him.

Let's see how the year plays out before we hang the front office on this one. Of course keeping your best player off the field can't help your coaching tenure.

I read the situation. The situation was, Ralph wanted someone else. Marv wanted Dick. The coach Ralph supposedly wanted would arguably have been more expensive than Dick.

What does Wade have to do with what I'm saying?

you are crazy if you think Ralph will overpay for players which means nothing if the coach he hires can't put the pieces together.IMHO Ralph isn't the smartest ownerwhen putting forth a winning team, but making assumptions that the hired Dick because Dick is cheap seems bogus especially since Dick was not his choice.

to be fair to ralph, our issues with coaches have not been with their desire for more cash. it's been that they can't win.

Surely, you could make a link between money and higher performance, but it's not a science. Spending more doesn't necessarily make you a better team.

I also think TD wanted coaches that he could push around more so than a proven winner.

they can't win because they don't know how to because they don't have the experience...and then as they learn from their mistakes when it comes time to reup on a contract they expect to get paid more and they are sent packing.

but typo, that hasn't been the case in this 9 year span of ugliness. we've dismissed coaches with time on their contracts because they weren't winners.

Jauron has experience as an NFL headcoach. not a great record, but he's done it before. If jauron gets to the playoffs, he's a real value and i am sure he'll be brought back. if he fails, we'll get another cheap guy where they hope they can get value. i don't see them stiffing jauron if he does what he's suppose to do.

Contradict much?

Look up the fact that we're in the bottom 5 in the league when it came to paying for coaches in the past 9 seasons. I'm done trying to convince someone who is content in his own naivety and opinionated ignorance. Ralph is cheap when it comes to spending his own money (coaches) but he HAS to spend money on players because it's a ****ing rule that you have to spend so much money to the cap. So don't give me this crap about him overpaying players and that that means he's not cheap. He's stupid for overpaying players because it lead to the Peters thing, so not only is he cheap when it comes to spending his own money, but he's a moron and so are the people who overpaid Kelsay (which then in turn we had to overpay Schobel, which in turn pissed off Peters and set a precedent). Now the Stroud thing was a bargain, so while he has his eff ups, he makes up for them in other areas, so I'm not concerned with overpaying for certain players because its something small market teams have to do, but also there's a responsiblity that comes with that, you have to be really smart about who you overpay so you don't screw yourself down the line, and the main catalyst for this Peters mess was the insane amount of money given to Kelsay because it set off a chain reaction that culiminated to our Pro Bowl LT not being here.

All I can say is anyone who thinks a general manager does not work with a budget is clueless. I can't imagine someone can be so obtuse to reality to think a functional manager in any organization does not work with a budget it's central the job function. It just so happens the league negotiations with the players are what sets the budget for the team expeditures. The owner of the teams set the budget for the coaching staffs. This is how it works. If you need an eyewitness report and links from Bucky Gleason to know this then you seriously need help.

the premise of your entire presence in this thread is that the GM has been given free reign to hire anyone they want with no restrictions as long as RW is OK with the hire. I guess you are right since he's not OK with the hire if the guy wants more money than he's willing to spend.

no my premise in this thread is that I wanted proof that Ralph picks his coaches based on who's the cheapest.

ralph didn't pick Dick and would've had to pay more money for his choice so how does that make Raphaels premise right?

have you ever hired anyone? Have you ever gotten a job? Do you honestly think there wasn't a budget involved with filling that position? People know before hand what they are going to spend to fill a position and they seek candidates that will work for those dollars. Why do you think they ask before hand what your salary requirements are? It's because they don't want to waste their time and money interviewing people they have no intention of hiring due to dollars.

where did I say there isn't a budget? I never denied that . The problem is people implying that we brought in Dick because he was cheap. People implying that we bring in coaches because Ralph is cheap when it seems that he hires coaches based on GM recommendation that even you think is what MArv did when he brought Dick.

no, the GM says in the media this is who they recommend. What they leave out is the parameters they've been given to make the hire. It's common sense I'm sorry man.

you seem to be one of those who thinks all the public relations you see in the media tells the whole story. There is no sense of even talking to you about anything any more.
