Career Notes | Agility | High School | Personal | Stats

              ANALYSIS
Positives: Has a muscular frame with good quickness and agility … Shows strength at the point of attack, taking on the lineman or fullback with aggression, using his hands well to shed … Smart athlete who calls defensive signals … Stays on his feet and knows how to avoid blocks while maintaining balance on the move … Sees counter plays quickly … Can drop into zone coverage with his head on a swivel and has the acceleration to get to the receivers in the deep zone … Also shows good awareness in man coverage, mirroring the receiver in the short area before switching off on his assignment … Comes off the edge with explosion as a pass rusher and can blast his way up the middle to track down the ball … Can play any linebacker position, but his hand usage, run pursuit and zone drops are better suited for the middle … Allows little cushion on running backs coming out of the backfield in passing situations … Shows fluid lateral agility and crisp change-of-direction technique.
Negatives: While quick to play the middle, he lacks the foot speed to cover receivers on the outside … Lacks natural hands for the interception or pass deflection … Uses his hands well to shed, but must do a better job of extending his arms to defeat the cut blocks … Needs to finish better as a tackler, as he is more of a finesse-type than a physical hitter … More of a grabber than a classic wrapup tackler, allowing ball carriers to slip off his initial hit at times … Needs to step up and plug the holes at the line of scrimmage, as he seems a little slow to scrape downhill … Little undersized for the next level … Better suited for a defensive system that will allow him to cover up, read and move, rather than one that relies upon him to step up and plug holes at the line.

              CAREER NOTES
The team co-captain is a vastly underrated athlete with great field instincts … Three-year starter who joined receiver Billy McMullen and safety Shernard Newby as the only players in school history to play in 50 collegiate games (including bowls) … Recorded 420 tackles (256 solos) with 7 sacks for minus-57 yards, 19 stops for losses of 93 yards, 10 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 8 pass deflections, 2 interceptions and 19 quarterback pressures … Only Charles McDaniel (432, 1982-85) and Jamie Sharper (435, 1993-96) had more tackles in a career for the Cavaliers … His 10 forced fumbles are one shy of the school's all-time record of 11 by Stuart Anderson (1978-81).

He's an outside linebacker from Virginia. He played inside in a 3-4 the last couple years though.

Solid pick. OLB. Sporting News magazine had him ranked the 4th best OLB in the draft. He's 6-1, 236. Sporting News magazine ranked him the BEST OLB run defender.

Sounds like a solid run defender. Weak in coverage, but he probably wasn't drafted for coverage skills anyway.

i saw tons of Virginia games, being that they are the local college here.. i went to Virginia Tech, their arch rival..

crowell is the brother of the WR in detriot..

he was a dominant player on their defense.
