    Practice Squad

Just out of curiosity, has there ever been a Practice Squad player who became an NFL starter?

I can't think of one in Buffalo off the top of my head and I'm not familiar enough with any other teams' rosters to know.

It seems that Practice Squad players become like Happy Gilmore trying out for hockey- they're guys like Drew Haddad and DJ Fitzpatrick who make camp for 2-3 consecutive years, then fade into oblivion.

I know he was undrafted but was he on the practice squad? I thought he made the team as a TE his first year.

Yes Peters was definitely not a PS guy.

Tommy Maddox is someone that I think might've done it.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
        It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Peters actually did spend some time on the PS.

PS isn't only there to make players into stars. It's main purpose is for players that can be brought on to the active roster when needed. I believe it works pretty well in that regard.

I think there have been a number of PSers who've gone to be pretty good players. While not a starter, George Wilson was originally on our PS.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

Jerry Ostroski and Jay Riemersma are two others that come to mind, although that was obviously awhile ago.

Derek Schouman, who could end up starting, spent some time on the PS, too.

Tommy Maddox was a former 1st roudn pick. I doubt he was ever on a practice squad.
