The Houston Texans released veteran linebacker Rosevelt Colvin and 20 other players Friday, the day before NFL teams must set their 53-man rosters.

The Texans signed Colvin in June after he was released by New England. They had hoped he could be a situational pass rusher, but decided he wasn’t valuable enough to take up a roster spot.

“The bottom line was to have a player on your team to just play nickel, he would have to be special,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “We had to sit there and weigh him against players who could play special teams and do some other things for our team.”

Colvin had recovered from a foot injury that kept him out of the last five games and the playoffs last season. However, he struggled since arriving in Houston and wasn’t anywhere close to becoming the pass-rushing threat opposite Mario Williams the Texans were looking for.

Colvin had 52z sacks in nine seasons in Chicago and New England.

Houston has one more cut to make and is evaluating running back Chris Brown to see if he is healthy enough to contribute this season. Brown, who was signed this offseason, has been struggling with back problems since the start of training camp.

I think it makes sense. Or Victor Hobson. I prefer Colvin.

Coy Wire has a job and Colvin doesn't. If Colvin has anything left , he could've beaten out guys like Wirefor a spot. IMO, Colvin may have become Jeff Posey.

The grass is always greener for these people. You just can't convince them otherwise...

We don't need him to be a pass rushing specialist Houston needed him to be. He just needs to cover the lanes on his side.

I heard on NFLN that Colvin has lost his speed as lb after his injury and is too small to be a DE.

Think about it. If BB drops him and so did the texans why should we pick him up just because he has epxerience? Don't you think these teams would've kept him if that experience up'ed his game?

Colvin should've beaten Seau out of a job.

People were whining about us picking up BB garbage in Milloy and Drew. If we picked him up people would be whining about that again.

he isn't even signed yet is he? Let's start worrying if Costanzo ends up having to start for us. He may not even see the field as a lb'er. Until then, chill.

Couldnt agree more thurm, he was pushed out of the play and run over with alraming regualrity
We need to sign and draft Lbers over 220lbs i dont understand all we do is bring in these tiny LBers, that contribute to the 30th ranked D nice...

Pats cut Colvin because he had a huge cap number and at the time he was injured. As I recall they didn't try to re-sign him because they didn't think he was healthy yet; perhaps they know more about his injury than the rest of us? I thought I read somewhere that Houston was trying to play him at DE rather than LB, and he was getting pushed around in the transition, which was why the Texans cut him; can't really hold that against Colvin if that was the case.

I don't know; on one hand the Pats defense seemed to sink last year as soon as he went out with an injury, which says a lot about his impact. On the other hand it seems like he was missing games with injuries almost every season in New England; do we really want to bring in an injury prone player who may or may not be healthy now?

They already signed Blake Costanzo. There's no way this team was going to bring in anyone worth a **** to be their #6 LB. Although....as of now, it basically means that Jon ****ing Corto is our #5 LB on the depth chart.... :puke:

If Colvin is so good and ready to play then why isn't he on a roster yet? My betting is that he is going to wait a week or two to see how teams shake out and then join a team he thinks has some sort of chance.
