Bills work out FB Kyle Eckel

Eckel was just cut by the Pats after battling an injury all of camp. He was on the roster as a backup FB/RB and ST'er last year, but didn't make the team this year (basically, he was replaced by Lamont Jordan as the 5th RB).

Eckel is not a pure FB. He was a RB in college at Navy. He is a big guy who accelerates pretty well and runs hard, but lacks long speed. Not a nifty runner at all, but a straight-ahead banger. He isn't noted as a blocker, but more of an offensive FB/RB 'tweener. He was a good ST player in NE on coverage units.

Routine to look for talent for any NFL team. Absolutely no reason to make a big deal out of this.

Get as much scouting info at lunch and send him packing. I'm sure this is the only reason.

my understanding is that we are looking to make FB a more prominent role and we only have one. if he goes down, we don't exactly have the TE depth to slide into the backfield. it makes sense to me to give this guy a look at.

Great move. Has anyone else but me realized that our ST sucked in the preseason? Time after time teams got great returns, and we sucked returning kicks and punts. In the Pittsburgh and Indianapolis game, we had a player at the 20 before McKelvin got the KR. We need another ST player badly. Its our 3rd biggest need other than LB and TE (wow that is so good to say)
