PITTSBURGH (April 27, 2003 9:22 p.m. EDT) - Midway through Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Steelers were down to the final two picks of their smallest draft class ever and still hadn't chosen an offensive player.

If offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey was impatient or nervous - and the Steelers signaled for weeks that they would draft a quarterback - he wasn't showing it.

"I think we picked some great players that are going to help our team. We filled some spots I think we needed," he said. "I was real comfortable with who we got defensively."

But Mularkey probably never thought they would keep picking defenders - and keep picking them.

The Steelers went into the draft with a glaring deficiency in their pass defense, and they used the first three of their five picks trying to fix it. ...
