we signed one of the best deep snappers as an Undrafted FA

Former UTEP deep snapper Jon Dorenbos signed a two-year free agent deal with the Buffalo Bills Sunday, becoming the only Miner to sign with an NFL team on draft weekend.

Dorenbos, 22, guaranteed by the Bills to be the only deep snapper in camp, is expected to report to a mini-camp in Buffalo today.

The 6-foot, 240-pound Garden Grove, Calif., native, who snapped for UTEP the past three seasons, was tagged the best deep snapper available this year by some pro scouts.

"He's the best I've seen this year," St. Louis Rams special teams coach Bobby April told ESPN.com. "And he might be the best in a lot of years; maybe among the top guys I've ever seen."

This could well be the best Undrafted FA signing of the off-season, as this guy is a special talent at LS.

Great pick up but I have a few questions.

What exactly makes a guy a special long snapper? Are his snaps perfect every time? Is he both a great snapper and a great blocker? Can he play another position and play it well?

I was just telling a friend last night that we have a huge need for a long snapper.

              Way to go TD

Well, you could see the poor play we got from out LS (JR & Moore) last year, as their snaps fluttered and took forever to get to the punter. The deal with a skilled LS is he can get the ball to the punter/placeholder fast and accurate. The thing with this guy is he isn't just one of the fastest LS I've seen, but he is incredibly accurate. Furthermore, you'll love his attitude as he will get a handful of special teams tackles, and takes that duty seriously.

I know my team was one of many who tried to get him into camp after the draft… TD pulls another out of the hat

Since the LS position is so important and this guy is so good, why not use a pick on him?

i think cuz he plays less than 5% of the snaps in a game.

bingo... he's good... but most teams veiw special teams as an afterthought and just stick a backup TE or an old Center who cant play anymore there for the league min.

                        Thanks for that insight Ingtar!!!

My only question about this guy is his size. Isn't he a little on the light side? How much more weight will he need to add (if any)?

nah... size really isn't that big an issue for LS... the only concern might be if he gets overpowered on placekicks

The accuracy abd speed of the long snap is what makes for a great long snapper. Ask the NY Giants if a long snapper is important.
