    Deep thinking

Cover Story: Trent Edwards’ accuracy on long throws allows Bills to stretch the field

Van Pelt praises QB’s ability to place passes ‘down the chimney’
By Mark Gaughan NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

The plays bring an immediate smile to the face of Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert.

Two deep passes from Trent Edwards to Lee Evans in the season-opener against Seattle set up two touchdowns for the Bills.

“It was good to see,” Schonert said. “They were perfect throws. He put it right where he had to put it. Those were good.”

Couldn't be, Trent has a weak arm.

Article is spot on though, the two deep passes to Lee were right on the money and placed where only Lee could catch them.

      Re: Deep thinking

Week 1 did answer the big offseason question of whether Trent can throw the long ball.

He doesn't have to be a deep ball specialist, just good enough at it to hit a few now and then and keep the secondary honest. I think he at minimum showed that last week.

        Re: Deep thinking

actually there were at least three, including the one evans dropped in the ez while being closely double covered - but the ball placement was perfect

still, i remain very concerned about trents bad weather skills. last sunday was NOT a 'bad' weather day as it was warm with very little wind, mostly just heavy sprinkles, and frequent breaks in the precipitation. hes shown he can be very accurate in those kind of conditions, but so far his pattern is to be less than average when the weather isnt ideal or close to it

so next time we really do get a 'bad weather' game my fingers will be crossed with hopeful ferocity

Things that are pure BS regarding Trent:

          1) "He's not that big." Bigger than Tom Brady and above average for size.

          2) "He can't throw the deep ball". I've seen him throw deep lasers in enough games to just laugh when I hear this.

          3) "He's a dink and dunk player". Well after having Bledsoe and Losman only being able to toss long balls it might look that way but the reality is that this kid has a brain and is looking for the best options. This ultimately is why JP will never, ever, be a starting QB in this league.

People forget the way Montana and Kelly played the game. You guys forget that and need to pull out the VCR and look at the old footage.

            Re: Deep thinking

One thing about Trent though- he still doesn't know how to lead Evans when Evans gets open deep. I don't know if he lacks the arm strength or if he's not used to Evans' speed, but on two of those deep balls, Lee had the defender by a good two steps and probably could have had six if he didn't have to slow down a little to catch the ball.

Trent's getting him the ball, which is a great start. But it would be nice to see him take the next step and hit Lee in stride.

Another dumb post thats just as dumb as the predictions you made in offseason to the flipflopping you do around here.

Why do you have to turn this into a JP bashfest to pump up Trent? They are both our qb's .Get behind them.

FYI, under Turk JP has been awsome in short passing game in the little we've see in preseason.

You're just as bad as those who say Trent has a weak arm.

the weather concern is still out there, but he came around in week 1 and it was the first game in a while. let's see if that is the issue as opposed to bad weather.

the games last year were very outside the norm weather conditions. i wouldn't use those as a mark of weather he can or can't play in the weather.

He still tends to underthrow Evans. He will get getter because he does have a strong arm.

another dumb post from a person who wined and cried about the "dink and dunk fest" of TE. TE has never been a dink and dunk QB it's just a case of grasping at straws for the people who can't admit JP is just not going to make it.

it's kind of idiotic how when TE throws a short pass he did it because he has a weak arm...but when he throws downfield it gets completely ignored.

yes the weather was "bad" to start the game last week, but everyone is forgetting that Matt Hasselback who plays in Seatle (where it rains alot) had his fair share of problems too..... I think they were both shaking off some rust because neither of them played much in the preseason. Trent will be just fine.

Trent was 2/3 on deeps. One was painfully underthrown. All is good though, not calling for a JP revolution or anything, just saying.

                              Re: Deep thinking

Trent threw a ball that was fairly deep. But, it didn't prove he can make all the throws. The longest one started at the Bills 48, and Lee caught it at the 24. that is only 28 yards for the LOS. And, had it been reviewed, it would have been called incomplete, because Lee didn't get both feet down with possession (I'm not sure you can fault Trent, just thought it was worth noting).

I will give you an example of what would start to shut me up though. In the Jets-Dolphins game, in the first quarter, Farve ran a play action. The play started on the Jets 44, and he threw it from the center of the field to the left sideline, and it was caught at the 10. This pass was 46 yards in the air from the LOS (not counting the drop back, or the angle). And, he did it with ease.

Trent has yet to throw a bomb. And I have serious doubts about his ability to do it in Buffalo late in the year. I hope he proves me wrong, because at some point, I am sure we will need it.
