1. The Bills 3rd down defense has allowed a conversation rate of only 18%. (2nd in the NFL).
B. In two games, the Bills have committed only 5 penalties for 54 yards. The 5 penalties is tied for the fewest in the NFL (with NE and Houston) and the 54 yards is 5th. Dallas has 21 penalties for 190 yards.
iii. With 7 sacks, the Bills are 4th in the NFL.
4. The Bills defense is yielding 4 yards per play, 5th in the NFL.
E. The longest pass play given up by the Bills defense is 22 yards. This is the 2nd shortest "long" pass play given up by a team this year, with only the Bungles and a long of 19 being better.
vi. The Bills have given up one passing TD. 3 teams have allowed none. They have also allowed only 1 rushing TD, while 5 teams have allowed none. By allowing only 2 offensive TDs, the Bills are tied for 2nd in the NFL (with 6 other teams) behind the Ravens.
These are not the end all and obviously there have only been two games played so I know it does not mean a lot yet. But they are encouraging and better than the alternative. The penalties stat is great and is one of the strengths of a Jauron team. Last year's least penalized team had 59 penalties (Seattle) and best in yards was 428 (Also Seattle). Projecting the Bills this year would put them at 40 and 432.
The 3rd down defense is nuts. Last year the #1 defense in 3rd down conversion was at 31%. Obviously it will not stay at 18, but even if it doubles to 36%, it is an amount that would have been #6 last year.
