I'd like to have official word from the Sabres but WGR isn't some hockeybuzz rumor site so I guess I should start my dancing in the cubicle.

Over the past year, things have been fine.

It was before that it did not go well.

In-between, slightly closer to Peters.

Maybe it would be like a Lynch extension in a few or trading for Stroud.

That is basically how the NHL cap system works. It is not nearly as convoluted as the NFL cap and is a much better system.

Better as in the small market teams can keep up with the bigger markets?

Better in that:

1. When a deal is signed it is guarenteed for both sides. So if you sign a 5 year 20 million deal, the cap hit is 4 million per. The team can't reduce your salary (there is a buy out, but it is not cheap). The player has no reason to hold out, as extensions are just that - an extension. Pominville, for example, will still make 1.375 million this year and count 1.033 million against the Sabres cap. Next year, and for the 4 years after that, he will count ~5.25 million. And no extensions are allowed until a player has only one year left on his deal. So somebody like Jason Peters would be stuck with his deal for two more years.
2. This also avoids the bonuses and funny accounting tricks teams use. So a team can't give a huge up front signing bonus like they do in the NFL.

It is a simple, no frills cap system.

Wow, far less complex. That's definitely one area that the NHL has the NFL beat.

Big time.

There is a thread somewhere in the Bills forum where I said the NFL should subscribe to the NHL style of cap.

How it would work on teams that have 100 million caps as opposed to 50 million caps, as well as ~60 players under contract as opposed to ~22 I am not sure.

But the basics are nice, closes loopholes, prevent players from getting greedy and prevent teams from screwing players.

one other thing you forgot. Teams must be cap compliant for all future years now. In other words, if the 2008-9 cap is $60 million then the team must be under the cap for all years forward as opposed to just this one year.

Dr. Lecter
09-19-2008, 05:57 AM
That can be implied with the idea that each player's average is what counts every year and that his cap hit does not change.

I disagree.
Drury, I believe, didn't even consider staying in Buffalo once he got a call from NY. Drury always wanted to be on the Rangers since he was a little kid, look at the photos they used to show during broadcasts and such - always in Rags gear. It was his dream. He got that offer and ran with it.
Wouldn't you?

They could have signed him before FA started for that amount.

The Buffalo Sabres report for physicals today, signifying the start of the 2008-09 season. If they can match their general manager’s offseason, fans are in for an entertaining year.

Darcy Regier no doubt led the NHL in goals this summer, achieving every one he stated by closing the offseason with a contract extension for Jason Pominville. The Sabres and their high-scoring winger agreed on a five-year, $26.5 million deal Thursday that will keep Pominville in Buffalo through 2013-14.

“Not only did we draft him, but he is someone who has grown up in this organization, along with others, and has continued to get better and better,” Regier said. “He just brings a lot of qualities. As was pointed out to me numerous times, he was the 19th-leading scorer in the National Hockey League [with 80 points]. Lindy [Ruff] and the coaching staff rely on him for a lot of things, whether it’s power play, penalty killing, even strength, last minute. Coaches don’t hand those things out lightly. It’s a tremendous responsibility, and it’s one that he’s earned from the start.”

Extending Pominville’s deal was the final entry on Regier’s to-do list. His other agenda items:

• Add size to the organization, which he did at June’s draft by selecting eight players who average nearly 6-foot-2.
• Acquire a gritty defenseman, which he did when Craig Rivet came in a trade from San Jose.
• Get a dependable backup goaltender, which came in the form of veteran Patrick Lalime.
• Sign franchise netminder Ryan Miller to a new deal before he became a free agent next year, and the sides agreed on a five-year, $31.25 million extension in July.

I honestly only have one more thing they need to do and it is sort of a complaint.

No more rotating captains. Just pick one and be done with it.

Dr. Lecter
09-19-2008, 07:55 AM
I would kinda expect Pominville to be given the captainacy.

Maybe a D-man (Rivet? Teppo?) as one assistant and then either Hecht or Roy as the other.

Well I'm hoping Pominville gets it, he was awesome last year when he had the C, but I don't want this month to month nonsense.
