    Weathersby still dealing with shooting

(April 28, 2003 2:01 p.m. EDT) - When he heard the gunfire behind him, Dennis Weathersby couldn't react, but he had time to think.

"I hope I don't get hit with a bullet. I hope I don't die. I hope I can walk," he recalled. "There were a lot of things going through my head."

Weathersby did get hit with a bullet. It entered his back, passed through his lung, exited through his chest and lodged in his left arm. He was in front of friend Calvin Byrd's house in Duarte, Calif., about to get into his truck, when he got caught in the drive-by shooting. It was Easter Sunday.

Only a week away from the day that would write his ticket out of the violence-ridden suburb of Los Angeles he had grown up in, the cornerback from Oregon State fell unconscious. His friend, Byrd, got him into the truck and sped to the hospital. Along the way, Weathersby lost half the blood in his body.
