I doubt he'll stay at 42. I'm sure he'll get his pick once it's his time to shine. :D

Players get to pick their numbers? I always thought they were assigned.

if he likes his college number (2) then he probably has some say in 42...22 is taken...32 is OJ, although Oulads says that Gash will wear it...nothing left a RB can wear but 42.

The Bills have so many players that the only numbers available are:

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,13,32,34,46,63,78

And they don't assign 32, 34 or 78

...what does it say for Rodney Wright when he is assigned 19 and Sam Aiken gets 89...bye-bye Wright (never should have been here).

why cant WM get 2? do the RBs have to fall between 20 and 50?

Yes......RBs & DBs can have 20-49, K,P,&QBs are 1-19, etc

I think McGahee can get #2 if he wants it. Keyshawn Johnson has #19, so why not?

In order for that to happen the team drafting the players has to have assigned all the numbers that that player is eligible for. When the Jets draft KJ all the 80s were taken (he wore 3 in college).

if we signed a back to 46 and another could take WMs number then since 34 and 32 arent assigned he could get 2

Ken Simonton, who is in NFLE, if he is invited to camp would, as of now, be assigned 46 (only number left)...I doubt the league would go for giving McGahee 2 because 32 and 34 aren't retired...it's just the Bills choice not to reissue them.

I answered this somewhere-

Paul Horning wore 5 for the Packers. But with specialization and all that, the NFL put in a rule in 1972 standardizing the numbers.

Numbers do more than identifying players. Players with certain numbers who line up covering the line of scrimmage (80's for instance) are wearing an "elligible" number and do not need to report to an official. Inelligible numbers covering the end of the line of scrimmage (say an extra Tackle coming in on goal line situations) need to report to an official before the play.

QB's, Kickers, and "Specialists" get 1-19 (Keyshawn gets to call himself a specialist, I guess- KR?)

20-40 RB's, DB's

60-70's Interior Linemen on offense and defense (except Centers for some reason)

TE's and Receivers 80's

and so on......
