Salary Guy: Palmer or Leftwich?

Who’s worth more? NBCSports.com investigates

By Bob McCullough

Welcome to a new feature of NBCSports.com, the Salary Guy. Every two weeks, Salary Guy will break down a bargain and a bust in sports. This time, we take a look at the top two drafted quarterbacks: Carson Palmer and Byron Leftwich.

Palmer rode a strong senior season to become the consensus first pick in the draft, and he also impressed talent evaluators with his willingness to put in the time to pick up the intricacies of a pro system. That, combined with Palmer’s strong arm and the fact that he played at USC for a former pro coach, Pete Carroll, convinced the Bengals to pony up a $10 million signing bonus for Palmer as part of a deal that will pay him an average of $6 million a year for the next three years. If Palmer pans out as the Bengals quarterback of the future, he could make as much as $40 million over six years, despite lingering questions about his ability to make quick reads and adjustments.
