In sports there are always winners and losers. That’s the essence of competition, and nothing is more competitive than the annual NFL Draft that began Saturday, an event where no points are scored but where there are always big winners and sometimes even bigger losers.

THE DRAFT WAS a widely unpredictable one. There were seven trades, at least six players selected that few people thought would go so early, and one team, the Vikings, that suffered from brain lock while trying to make a trade.
What that made for was a wild ride throughout the first round and for much of the day. Here is an assessment of how the 32 teams performed.
