Bills by the numbers; at the BYE

A look at how the Bills are looking statistically after their 4-1 start and on their bye week.

--- Trent Edwards is 11th in the NFL with a 93.9 QB rating and is 6th in the league in completion % at 66.4.

--- Marshawn Lynch is 14th in the NFL with 330 Rushing yards. He’s averaging only 66 yards per game, off from 85 yards per game last year. However he already has 15 receptions in five games this year, as opposed to 18 over 13 games last year. His 15 receptions is tied for 7th in the NFL among running backs.

--- Get the ball in the flat to Fred Jackson more. He’s averaging 8.9 yards AFTER the catch, second in the division only behind former Bill FB Darian Barnes among RB's.

n Lee Evans is leading the AFC and is 4th in the NFL with 432 receiving yards. His 27.0 yards per catch is second in the league only to Devery Henderson (Saints- 31.7). 14 of Evans’ 16 catches have went for first downs (or touchdowns)

--- All the talk about Aaron Schobel is largely exaggerated. Yes, he only has one sack. But his 18 solo tackles leads the AFC among DE's and is tied for 2nd in the NFL. His four run “stuffs” are tied for first in the conference and fourth in the NFL. So going by the numbers, it seems Schobel is having a hard time getting to the quarterback, but has improved his run defense dramatically.

--- Marcus Stroud is tied for 8th in the league among defensive tackles with 18 stops. He also has three “stuffs.”

--- Paul Posluszny has 29 solo tackles, tied for 6th in the NFL among linebackers.

--- Donte Whitner’s 27 solo tackles are tied for 5th in the NFL among safeties. Personally, I don’t like this stat as it means too many tackles are being missed up front.

n Bills safeties aren’t defending many passes. Both Whitner and Ko Simpson only have one pass defended credited to them each this season.

--- For those who say Josh Reed isn’t valuable, here’s a good stat for you. Reed has 21 receptions this year. 14 of those 21 (66%) have went for first downs. Reed is tied with Evans and Wes Welker among leading AFC East WR’s with first down catches.

--- Brian Moorman is 5th in the AFC in punting average at 46.5 yards, tied for 2nd with 10 punts inside the 20, and 2nd in forced fair catches with 6.

--- The Bills offense is scoring 25.2 points per game (11th in NFL), 313 yards per game (17th), 214.6 pass yards per game (14th), 98.4 rush yards per game (22nd), 16.6 first downs per game (24th), converting 37.5% of third downs (16th) and control the ball for 30:32 per game (17th)

    - Defensively, the Bills are allowing 20.8 points per game (13th), 299 yards per game (10th), 114.2 yards rushing per game (19th), 184.8 yards passing per game (9th), defended 24 passes (T-10th) and have 10 sacks (T-16th)

    Forgot about Royal.

9th in the AFC among TE's with 13 catches, and has 102 yards, a TD and a lost fumble.

    Basically, mediocre as usual.

If you had told me these numbers in the preseason, (especially Edwards' numbers) I would have been very excited. Much improved, at least numbers-wise, from last year.

You forgot the most important stat

Wins in the AFCE (4) 1st in the AFCE.

basically the only stat that matters.

It still sucks that Evans has 16 receptions this year. He should have had that many after 2-3 games, not 5. It's not all his fault though, there are a lot of variables.

One of the main reasons for that is that Edwards is spreading the ball around more than Losman ever did. He's using Evans as his big-play receiver and Reed, Jackson, Parrish, Lynch and Royal as possession guys.

Evans stats show two things, firstly that he and Edwards are on the same page when it comes to making big plays, and secondly that Edwards doesn't try to force things and take stupid risks. Evans may well have made a couple more catches had Edwards thrown at him in risky situations, but Edwards has checked down to a safe receiver and taken the yards the defense has given him, rather than going for the home-run every time.
