Mark Mancari scored the first Pirates' goal of the season off a rebound just 59 seconds into the game on an assist by Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy.

Manchester Monarchs defenseman Josh Kidd tied the game at the 4:10 mark with a power play goal assisted by Trevor Lewis and took the lead at 13.59 on an unassisted goal scored by center Gabe Gauthier.

The Pirates answered with their own power play tally when Mark Mancari scored his second goal of the night on a setup on assists by defensemen Marc-Andre Gragnani and Chris Butler.

In the second period, Buffalo native Tim Kennedy scored his first professional goal at 13:52 to give the Pirates the lead. Mathieu Darche and Mark Mancari assisted on the play.

Tyler Bouck, the only returning player from the 2007-08 Pirates roster, increased the lead at 17:08 as he poked in a rebound off a Nathan Gerbe shot on net. Gerbe earned the assist and Mancari recorded his fourth point on the night. Just 22 seconds later, Bouck added to the lead on a short-handed goal assisted by Dylan Hunter and Derek Whitmore.

Mancari stayed hot in the third period, recording the first Pirates hat trick of the season. Mancari capitalized on a fed from Tim Kennedy and Chris Butler at 5:09 mark in the period, increasing the lead to four goals.

Portland goaltender Adam Dennis made 28 saves in the win and Manchester goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 27 shots in the loss.

meanwhile...

The Rochester Americans fell 6-1 to the Syracuse Crunch tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter in the second leg of a home-and-home series between the two teams. Despite an early goal from Rochester’s Karl Stewart, Syracuse would score six consecutive goals from six different goal scorers to earn its second win of the season.

um, no offense... but why even discuss this.... florida rarely keeps a stock of AHL'ers and this is a supremely young team..... if the panthers call anyone up its usually from the ECHL affiliate in florida.

should i go posting about how the former parent clubs of syracuse have been doing? :-P

but in all seriousness though, i do wish the new blood in portland luck, mainly since syracuse doesn't have to play them

Based on what?

Ellis can play on the PK and is physical. Mancari does not have the skating ability for the NHL. He is a classic case of a good AHL player who will not be in the NHL.
