Wow. I was 99% sure I had these NFL rules down but this week actually surprises me. I'm thinking it's wrong for my area.

Ok, maybe it is right. I must be missing something. My area gets all the Bills away games no matter what, and most of the home games. Typically when the Bills play at home and Pittsburgh is away the locals give Pittsburgh the game since they aren't obligated to show Buffalo, yet this week they are showing Buffalo.

There are 3 little gray areas that don't get any early game...St. Louis, Chicago, and NY metropolitan areas.

I live in the NY metropolitan area. That sucks. I'll see the game anyway, but not on my big screen HDTV.

The rule is that when a local team is playing at home, there can't be another game on TV opposite that game. So for example if the Bills are home on CBS at 1:00 and it's a FOX doubleheader that weekend, the Buffalo area does not get the 1:00 game on FOX. Same idea in every other city for whatever the local team is there. That's why you'll see a couple of areas colored gray on those TV maps every week, where there is no game on that network in that time slot.

I used to think it was a local decision, with the local channel figuring nobody would watch the 'other' game and therefore figuring they would make more profit with an old movie or an infomercial, but that is not true. The NFL put this in to effect apparently to reduce the number of 'no-shows' and not give fans a reason to stay home and watch a more compelling game when the local team was not very good. Paying for a ticket isn't enough even if the team or matchup is bad; they want to make sure you come to the stadium and spend more money on overpriced beverages too.

Seems to me that may have had some merit years ago, but with Sunday Ticket and sports bars showing every NFL game, it's not as if fans can't find a place to watch a different game on TV now. In my opinion the rule is outdated and needs to be abolished. I'm surprised the networks haven't pushed the issue, given how much leverage they have based on the money they are paying for broadcasting rights.

OMG! Imagine living where I live -- in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Each week, you either watch the Raiders or the 49ers during the day games on Sunday. Nothing else (with some exceptions).

It's absolutely pure torture!

(Though this year should be cool since we get 2 Buffalo games, 2 Brett Favre games and 2 Tom Brady, er, Matt Cassel games.)

2/3 of the US will be watching the Chargers at Bills, and once again the surrounding Atlanta area gets one of the worst games of the week.

Pittsburgh and Cincy?! Really?
