Rookies must impress early, agent says

    By Skip Wood, USA TODAY
So the draft's done, immediate fates are settled and the next big step for new NFL players and their agents is getting the best possible contract.

    Right?

Not to Gary Wichard, who had five clients selected in last weekend's draft, including No. 10 overall pick Terrell Suggs.

"In this day and age," Wichard says, "where you get drafted is basically defining in broad parameters what your contract is. That's why from January-April the negotiations are more important than from April-July, when we're actually talking numbers. ...

"So I'm telling my guys, even a couple of weeks before the draft, to make sure they're working out and getting ready for those minicamps, because (the camps) are coming up quick."
