MONTREAL (AP)—

The Montreal Alouettes released running back Lawrence Phillips on Thursday.

The Canadian Football League team did not explain why the former NFL first-round draft pick was released, saying in a statement that he "did not meet the minimum behavioral standards expected" of the organization.

Phillips, 27, walked out on the Alouettes midway through the 2002 season. He returned a few days later and helped Montreal win the Grey Cup last November.

The former Nebraska star saw his NFL career cut short by disciplinary problems and run-ins with the law. He was released by three NFL clubs.
