The scar on the back of his head is barely visible, thanks to the handiwork of a neurosurgeon and Mother Nature. As for the emotional scar, well, that has disappeared, and the only person who gets the credit is Chad Brinker, who is pursuing his NFL dream 18 months after doctors opened his skull to remove a plum-sized cyst.
Brinker, an 1,100-yard rusher last season at Ohio University, is one of two dozen rookie free agents who will be participating in the Jets minicamp this weekend at Hofstra. If roster spots were handed out based on courage and determination, he'd be a shoo-in.
"I'm very lucky to be here," Brinker said Wednesday night from his home in Martins Ferry, Ohio, a small steel-mill and coal-mining town famous for its high school football. "I was maybe one hit away from not being here. Now here I am, getting an opportunity to play in the NFL. I'm truly blessed."
