The Jets are declaring their draft a success based on their selection of Dewayne Robertson. But their second pick, Michigan linebacker Victor Hobson, will have as much to say about how this draft is viewed in two years as will the dynamic defensive tackle from Kentucky.

Will Hobson be as good as the Jets think he is? He'll begin to answer that question today at a three-day minicamp for rookies and selected veterans.

The Jets feel he's got all the tools to be Mo Lewis' heir apparent at strongside linebacker. General manager Terry Bradway said the hope is for Hobson to become a starter "whether late in the season or next year.''

And coordinator Ted Cottrell said Hobson "can do what we want him to do. We play a lot of 'under' front, and to play that you need your outside linebacker to be able to handle the tight end. This guy can do that just like Mo does. Victor does it better than anybody I've seen in the last two drafts.''

But independent draft experts remain unconvinced. He is undersized at 6-foot-½, although Cottrell said, "If this guy was 6-2 or 6-3 and doing what he does on the tight end, everybody'd be going crazy.'' Then there is Hobson's speed: His combine time was a slow 4.85. That and his height dropped him into Round 5 in some mock drafts.

But Cottrell and coach Herman Edwards said their time on him was 4.7, and Hobson said in personal workouts he averaged at a 4.59
