Every player has vivid memories of his first game. Defensive end Chris Kelsay made his NFL debut Sept. 7, 2003, in a 31-0 home win over the Patriots. Kelsay recalls Ryan Denney coming over to him in the jubilant dressing room and offering this sound bit of advice: “Don’t get used to it,” Denney said.
Fat chance. The Bills haven’t beaten the Pats since then. Like Kelsay, you don’t need reminding. The Pats have won nine straight (and 14 of 15) in the series. Hardly what you’d call a rivalry.
“Nine times,” Kelsay said. “It’s fuel for the fire. You’ve got to take it personally.”
Shield your eyes if you must. Send the kids into the other room. The average score of those last nine losses is 32-10. That’s if you’re kind enough to
round up the Bills’ score. Last year, it was 94-17.
So the only thing Kelsay has gotten used to is walking off the field with a sinking feeling in his gut. Now here we go again. The Bills, desperate for a win after two straight AFC East losses, take on the dreaded Pats today in Gillette Stadium, where they have never won.
