Looks like Brunell is one-and-done in Jacksonville

There has been plenty of speculation about the future of Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell since the team used a first-round pick on Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich last week. Here's the deal:

Owner Wayne Weaver, in a meeting with Brunell this week, told the quarterback just that, setting up the possibility that the team will be playing with a lame-duck starting quarterback in 2003.

"Do you believe this?" Brunell said. "After eight years, it's comes to this?"

The relationship between Weaver and Brunell has been strained over contract talks in recent years. Brunell has two years left on his contract, with hefty cap figures of $8.75 million this year and $10.5 million next season, so the Jaguars wanted to reduce those numbers.

They offered Brunell a two-year contract extension before the draft. But Brunell said there was no new bonus money included, a usual caveat to entice a player to do an extension, so he turned it down.
