History is on the Browns' side this week.

The pattern for QBs taken in the third round is to get a shot to start at some point, be found wanting and struggle to stay in the league.

That is why a Browns team that just got carved up by Jay Cutler doesn't mind a date against Buffalo's Trent Edwards. It's the kind of matchup Brady Quinn is supposed to win.

Edwards was the 92nd overall pick of last year's draft. It is amusing to hear the Bills say they have two starter-quality quarterbacks when the world basically knows they likely have none.

Speed receiver Lee Evans, for example, puts it this way:

"He's the leader of our offense, and we go as he goes. I think he's done a tremendous job this year of taking the game plan and playing well.

"I think over the last couple of weeks things haven't been going as well, so we need to try to work our way out of it, and he certainly has the mind set to do that. You can just tell that his leadership and everything has come two-fold since last year."

It was the loose definition of "couple." Edwards and Co. have lost four of five. The Bills have averaged a tepid 16.6 points during the month-plus slump. In a 20-10 loss at New England, they netted 168 yards.

The Browns' worst game was 169 yards, but that was back on Sept. 21 at Baltimore.
