Delhomme, Weinke looking to unseat Peete in Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jake Delhomme left New Orleans to be a starter and Chris Weinke wants to prove he can play in the NFL. For now, both are sitting behind Rodney Peete in their bid to be quarterback of the Carolina Panthers.

Peete worked with the first team in Carolina's first minicamp, Delhomme was second and was followed by Weinke and Randy Fasani.

Coach John Fox said despite the initial depth chart, it can change at any time.

"I think everybody out here has a chance to be that starter," he said. "We're going to play the best players, and they get a chance to set the depth chart."

Weinke, who started as a rookie two seasons ago when the Panthers went 1-15, struggled through last year when Fox benched him a week before the season-opener. He was never thrilled with his role as a backup and the Panthers are sure he'll try to move up the depth chart this season.

"I know Chris Weinke has a grit about him," Fox said. "He wants to prove me wrong and prove the coaching staff wrong. He wants to be the starting quarterback again."
