Buffalo's Dick Jauron has gone from a hot contender for NFL Coach of the Year one month ago to a coach who should be on the hot seat.
When the Bills were 5-1 and drawing raves coast-to-coast, owner Ralph Wilson reportedly offered Jauron a contract extension.
We don't know if Jauron accepted the offer, but if he did, why wouldn't the Bills have announced it?
Perhaps Jauron decided to wait to see how this season played out. If the Bills reached the playoffs — which at that point appeared likely — he might have been offered an even better deal to stay.
This is Jauron's third season in Buffalo. He was 7-9 (outscored 311-300) in 2006 and 7-9 (outscored 354-252) in 2007.
A 7-9 threepeat would be a strong clue that the Bills are spinning their wheels and sufficient reason for Wilson to at least strongly consider a coaching change.
The Bills are 5-5, but the way they've played in the last four games, they're no cinch to go 3-3 down the stretch to finish 8-8.
Jauron is a nice guy and a good football man. No one denies that. He'll have a job in the NFL for as long as he wants one. But this is his eighth full season as an NFL head coach and his record is a modest 55-73 (.430). He had one big season with the Chicago Bears (13-3 in 2001), but he's 42-70 in his other 112 games to date:
