I figured that since I just watched the 49ers vs. Dallas I would let you all know what to expect.
- First off don't expect much, they are not a good team at all.
- The first question many people might as is; "what type of defense do they run?" Well, they don't really have a set "type" of defense. I would say that they ran a 3-4ish scheme about 20% of the time and then other various defenses; Nickle, Dime, base 4-3, the rest of the time.
- Their weakness on their OL is on the outside. Right now Joe Staley, of Central Michigan fame is playing on the left and Adam Snyder is taking Jonas Jennings spot (IR) on the right. It's hard to call their interior a strength by most teams standards but in this case it is the Niners best. They are so worried about their inability to block on the outside that they regularly kept a TE in to help block.
- Nate Clements got simply torched by T.O. and I expect much of the same for Evans. Clements tries to rely too much on his speed and not enough on good technique.
- Their WR's drop quite a few balls, that is except for Issac Bruce who played an excellent game against Dallas. He looked fast and got out of his breaks very well; he might have another big day vs. the Buffalo zone scheme.
- The 49ers pass rush leaves so much to be desired, they blitzed about 40% of the time and really could not apply much pressure. When they did Romo just stepped up and avoided the pressure without much of an issue; Buffalo should have no problem doing the same.
- I only counted about five two TE sets the entire game outside of the goal-line.
- Their running game simply could not put it together against the Cowboys, Gore had the same problems Lynch has had all year with being hit in the backfield.
- The Bills need to beware of Gore coming out of the backfield. They are not afraid to throw it to him early and often.
- I'm interested to see if the Bills will take advantage of Spikes' inability to cover, he is a human mismatch vs. the TE.
- Although their pass rush leaves a lot to be desired they did a decent job at stopping the run and their defense swarms to the ball on run plays.
- I was surprised to see how easily Patrick Willis got pushed around, he really wasn't much of a threat in the hole.
- They really weren't much of a threat via ST's, granted their best returner, Rossum was injured in the second quarter. Nedney did miss a pretty easy FG and Lee didn't light the place up punting. I could see the Bills returning a P or K this week.
- The screen will be there this week.
- Remember that Bryant Johnson guy everyone wanted? Thank god the Bills passed.
Obviously there is far more we could go into but I hope this gives you at least some idea of what you should be looking for this weekend.
