When the Redskins selected Taylor Jacobs with their first draft pick last week, they ignored more pressing needs. But the club felt that Jacobs -- a projected first-round pick -- was too good to pass up with a second-round pick. And with the team's number three wideout spot unsettled, the former Florida star seemed like a shoo-in.

Jacobs appears to have an advantage being only one year removed from playing for Steve Spurrier. However, what Jacobs remembers about Spurrier as much as anything is that the coach goes with the best performer regardless of status. (Last year, Spurrier placed Kenny Watson, then an undrafted first-year player, ahead of Ladell Betts, Washington's second-round pick in the 2002 draft.)

The other receivers have an edge over Jacobs with more pro experience. Also, an NFL rule stipulates that Jacobs can't return to Redskins Park until May 16, when his college class graduates. Some dazzling catches during minicamp by Patrick Johnson, Darnerien McCants and Cliff Russell confirmed that the job won't automatically go to Jacobs.
