Sack Record Within Reach, B. Smith Will Return to Redskins

Defensive end Bruce Smith reported to Redskins Park yesterday for the Washington Redskins' weekend minicamp and said he plans to remain with the team in the fall for a 19th NFL season, postponing retirement for another year.

He also called his arrest last weekend near his home in Virginia Beach for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol "mind-boggling" because he passed a breathalyzer test.

Smith, who turns 40 next month, said a few details about his return remain to be worked out but he intends to play. He is only three sacks shy of Reggie White's NFL record of 198, but previously had declined to make his return official even when members of the organization and his agent, Leigh Steinberg, said they expected him to play. The offseason moves made by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder played a major role in his decision to come back for a fourth season with the club after 15 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Smith said.
