Syracuse has hired New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone as its next head coach, Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting.

According to Schefter, Marrone accepted the job today from Chicago, where he’s with the Saints to play the Bears tonight. Marrone is expected to stay with the Saints through the season before he begins the Syracuse job.

Marrone has never been a head coach at any level. He has worked as a college assistant coach at Cortland College, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Northeastern, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Tennessee. In addition to his three years on the staff of the Saints, he was a New York Jets assistant from 2002 to 2005.

As a player, Marrone was a Syracuse offensive lineman from 1983 to 1985 and played briefly in the NFL, with the Miami Dolphins in 1987 and the Saints in 1989, as well as the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football in 1991.

Poor guy, he's stuck with that sorry excuse of a program.

Poor guy, he's stuck with that sorry excuse of a program.

It is definitely at it's lowest point in my lifetime (possibly ever). Hopefully he can get it turned around. He's had outstanding offenses in NO, with some pretty young players. Hopefully it can translate for him. It's good to have a 'Cuse player back to coach. Maybe he can be the football program's Boeheim.

well scratch Syracuse off the list of places that Turner Gill could be coaching, Auburn is the other team that Gill could be coaching he's 6th on Auburn's head coaching job list so I've read. This is looking good for Gill staying at UB.
