The Patriots' youth movement has reached the backfield.
The Pats signed rookie free agent running back Derek Watson to the 80-man roster yesterday, choosing him instead of a pair of veterans also invited to try out at the Pats' recent rookie minicamp, former Giants starter Joe Montgomery and former San Diego starter Jermaine Fazande.
Montgomery came into the camp with the highest name value, having been a second-round pick of the Giants in 1999, but he didn't even make it through the weekend. Montgomery, whose mother is recovering from a stroke in East Chicago, Ind., was not on the field for Sunday's final workouts.
Watson (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) joins the fold despite a checkered off-field record in college, one that includes an assault charge, several driving-related issues and a marijuana possession charge in January 2002.
