2. You can't underestimate the role of newcomers Jared Allen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5651) and Bernard Berrian (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5603) to this team. Allen's 14.5 sacks are the most by a Vikings player since John Randle (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=196) had 15.5 in 1997. Berrian, meanwhile, is averaging a touchdown for every seven receptions and has a better per-catch average (20.6) than any other NFL player with at least 30 catches this season. That's about as much impact as you can expect from a free agent class.
3. The Vikings coaching staff sent Jackson a powerful message with the first play on their 15-play pregame script: A deep pass to Berrian. Arizona cornerback Roderick Hood (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4989) broke up the play, but Jackson said it was an important throw nonetheless. Not only did it let the Cardinals know that the Vikings were willing to throw downfield with their backup quarterback, but it also let the backup quarterback know he was trusted. "Just seeing that first play, that tells me we're going to take a shot," Jackson said. "It [says], 'I trust you with the football.' And that's great."

Had we of
A. Let Kelsay walk
B. Made those two FA moves

we are in the playoffs IMO. Agreed?
Then read about the confidence they have in Jackson and how he rewarded them. One question I have about the game is, did Turk not call any intermediate routes or was JP just too piss poor to see them? I side with the latter. He simply didn't know how to trust his WRs and didn't throw a pass past 10 yards until the Royal pick. He looked more lost out there than he ever has.

Defense better? Yes. Playoffs? No. The defense would have had to have had back to back shut outs against the 49ers and Miami. Almost impossible in the NFL of 2008. Even teams as bad as the Bills score three points a week.
