Modrak, a Pittsburgh native who worked 20 years for the Steelers in various front-office capacities, left as their college scouting coordinator in 1998 to become the Eagles' boss. He is in Hawaii for Hula Bowl workouts and did not return messages. Modrak had a good relationship with Cowher and that is something the Steelers are striving to build between their coach and a new personnel man after the contentious Cowher-Donahoe relationship.
Modrak commands much respect throughout the Steelers organization. Cowher and Modrak have kept in contact since Modrak went to work in Philadelphia. The Rooneys said Friday that Cowher will talk to candidates before Donahoe's successor is hired.
