Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have recalled LW Tim Kennedy from Portland (AHL). The 22-year-old Kennedy was born and raised in Buffalo, NY.

Currently in his first pro season, Kennedy (4/30/1986, 5’10”, 176 lbs.) is second on the Pirates in scoring with 27 points (5+22) in 29 games. Kennedy’s 22 assists lead all rookies, and his 27 points are second behind the 33 scored by Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux.

Kennedy played three years at Michigan State, finishing with 105 points (42+63) in 113 games. He led the Spartans in scoring for his last two seasons, scoring 43 points in 42 games during each campaign. In 2007-08, he led the team in all offensive categories, including 9 PPG’s and 5 GWG’s.

Kennedy was a key component of Michigan State’s 2007 National Championship team, as he scored the game-tying goal and assisted on the game winner in the title game win over Boston College. For his efforts he was named to the All-Tournament Team at both the Midwest Regional and 2007 Frozen Four.

Kennedy played youth hockey in the Buffalo area, and won gold with the Western Division in the 2002 and 2003 Empire State Games. Prior to attending Michigan State, he spent two seasons with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL.

Kennedy was acquired in a draft day trade with Washington on July 30, 2005, after being selected by the Capitals in the sixth round (181st overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

scouting report on Kennedy: could be as good or better than Patrick Kane, down to earth type of player, won't let success go to his head.

"My friends always tell me I'm not a professional hockey player. I'm still the same kid who lived down the street from them. You're not going to get any special breaks from us," Kennedy said. "You just have to stay humble. My parents and friends never let my head get too big." ~Tim Kennedy

Graduated from Bishop Timon St. Jude High School ... Four-year letterwinner in hockey ... Earned second-team all-league honors in 2000 and first-team all-league honors from 2001-03 ... Honorable mention all-state in 2002-03 ... Favorite NHL team: Buffalo Sabres ... Favorite NHL player: Vincent Lecavalier ... Son of James and MaryEileen Kennedy ... Says his father is biggest hockey influence, "since if it was not for him, I would not be where I am today. He taught me to skate before I could walk." ... Completed an internship with the Buffalo Police Department in the summer of 2007.

Gerbe will be a good player in the NHL, but Kennedy could be like another super:star: player that is from Buffalo Patrick Kane that's how good Kennedy could be. The Sabres future is bright! ~ Mike Robitaille, Sabres gamenight and shootout co-host

"I've been dreaming about this for my whole life, and for it to come true was unreal," Kennedy said. "It felt great. Our team got the win, and that was the main thing."

Kennedy started the game and received a loud ovation from the HSBC Arena crowd when he was introduced with Hecht and right wing Jason Pominville.

"That was real exciting," Kennedy said. "I didn't expect that at all. It was one of the best feelings I've ever had."

The call with Dineen on Friday night got Kennedy's weekend started, but most of the conversation was a blur.

"He was like, 'Sorry to disturb you, but you probably won't mind this call. You're getting called up,'" Kennedy said. "He talked for the next two minutes, but I didn't hear a word he said. I was just kind of in shock. It was the best call I've had in a while."

The feeling was the same for Kennedy's parents and girlfriend, who got the news as soon as the 22-year-old hung up with Dineen.

"She started screaming, and I called my parents and they started crying," Kennedy said. "By the time I got back to my girlfriend, half of South Buffalo knew. I was getting texts and phone calls."

And ticket brokers were getting attention. Kennedy's friends and family, who'd been waiting for the day since the Sabres acquired him in 2005, scrambled for ducats to be among the sellout of 18,690.

Yeah I'm with Thurm on this one. Kennedy has shown a lot of promise early in his career but as good as Kane? That's a bit of an exaggeration. He has a lot to prove before that comparison can be made.

I don't see how it can ever be made.

Kane was the freaking first overall pick, won rookie of the year and is lighting it up again this year(already 41 points). Not even in the same league these two.

scouting report

Talent Analysis
Kennedy previously projected as a quality defensive forward, and he has continued to develop at Michigan State. His defensive zone play and willingness to take the body have remained strengths, and he showed good leadership ability with his college team. Though not a pure scorer, he is an opportunistic and smart offensive player, with good fundamentals.

Future

Kennedy agreed to a two-year entry level contract with the Sabres, and will start in Portland, with a shot to work his way into the Buffalo lineup as he adjusts to the higher level of competition. A South Buffalo native, he will be closely watched as a fan favorite.

scouting report for Patrick Kane

Talent Analysis

Kane may not be the largest player in the game, but he’s got good leg strength, tremendous vision and playmaking instincts, prodigious puck-handling skills, and a nose for the net. All of this made him one of the top prospects in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kane was selected first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks, and almost immediately signed to a three-year contract by the team.

At the 2007 Blackhawks Prospect Camp, Kane played on a line with Jonathan Toews and Dan Bertram that was truly dominant against many older players and highly ranked prospects.

He needs to work on his play without the puck and his upper body strength.

Future
Kane is going to be given every opportunity to make the offensively-challenged Blackhawks roster in 2007-08. Barring injury, he will see regular playing time in the preseason and the first 10 regular season games before the Blackhawks decide whether to return him to London or keep him with the parent club. The determining factor will be Kane’s ability to withstand the physical rigors of NHL play, as well as finding his scoring touch against much tougher competition than he’s previously seen.
