Do better with less, the therapists keep telling us. Western New York sports fans keep getting the same advice. Here is a merciful review of our tattered jock calendar. Better luck in ’09.
• We kept asking ourselves, “Is Trent Edwards the quarterback to allow the Bills to reach beyond 7-9 as their level of satisfaction?” In ’08 the answer has been sometimes yes, sometimes no. The bigger question might be, “Is Edwards going to be the Bills’ version of the Sabres’ Tim Connolly, a fixture on the injured list?“ There may be a hint today if Edwards’ offensive line doesn’t keep him safe from Vince Wilfork of the Patriots.
• For that matter, will the Bills’ coach, whomever he may be, allow the offense to play to its strength with its running game and let the combination of Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson control the ball to set up the passing attack? Of course that would assume the overpaid offensive line plays tougher mentally and physically. It spoke volumes when ex-NFL personnel man Mike Lombardi observed the Buffalo line is too soft, probably from the less-than-taxing work they get in the summer at St. John Fisher, which seems less a training camp than a spa.
There’s always hope. The despised Miami Dolphins went from one victory in ’07 to the brink of the division championship. Of course the Tuna, Bill Parcells, is now running their football operation.
