I dont know squat about this years rookie LB crop, but...

I'm starting to hope we really identify the best one available and draft him.

I was astonished to seem at how much more success rookie LB's have in this league right off the bat.

The past 6 Defensive ROY have all been LB's

    2008; Jarod Mayo
    2007: Patrick Willis
    2006: DeMarco Ryans
    2005: Shawn Merriman
    2004: Johnathan Vilma
    2003: Terrell Suggs

F-That. Give me a LB at #11 and shore up other spots (DE big-time, C, TE) in free agency.

What LB's are we looking at that are probably there at #11?

I am cool with this but what DEs are available in FA?

Dont know of a lot off the top of my head and no list in front of me. I know Antonio Smith and Bertrand Berry from Arizona are both UFA.

Julius Peppers could be if not franchised, but Carolina has a choice to make, because if they tag Peppers they can't tag Jordan Gross, an All Pro OT.

Regardless, it seems you can draft LB and if its the right guy they make an instant impact. NOt just the ROY winners. Jon Beason was a beast for Carolina from day one, Keith Rivers was having a solid year for Cinci last year til he broke his jaw.

Telling you. A playmaking LB would be great for this defense. lets find a quality DE in FA and draft a LB at 11-- that should help this swiss cheese defense immensely.

This is what I've been saying.

Upgrade DE in FA for sure. We don't have to take a LB at 11 tho, could get somebody good in the 2nd round I bet.

OK, well Im saying it too-- assuming there is a good LB for us there at #11.

I'd be frontin if I said I knew a lot about this year's LB crop (at least as of now I would be)

Top guy without question is Aaron Curry. After that there is a slight dropoff.

a drop off to a point where taking a LB at #11 would be a huge reach? Like Whitner'ish?

From what I heard aint no way Curry will be there at 11

There is a shot at Aaron Curry falling that far. Some see him as top 10, even 5. I think though that you could see a few players go very high:

                Stafford
                Bradford
                Crabtree
                maybe Oher or Monroe
                Andre Smith
                Then guys like Vontae Davis
                Malcom Jenkins
I think Maclin could go top 10

Thats 8, and heres where it gets dicey... maybe the top ILB is ranked higher than Curry, maybe Maualuga, or maybe the top DE is ranked higher than Curry, maybe Maybin or Orakpo.

Its a real stretch to see Curry fall that far.

So, more realistic is to say that we are likely able to land:

                The top FS
                The top or #2 DE
                The top or #2 ILB

C? Yes we could get the top one, but I just cant see that anyone is worth that high a pick at this point
TE? Yes, a guy like Gresham or Pettigrew would be there, but its just too high IMO for one of them... Id feel better about a trade down with someone who covets a ILB or OT... maybe to the bottom 3rd of round 1 and pick up a 2nd. Thats not a bad idea if we get say Pettigrew, Mack, and then Weatherspoon for example or a DE.

I say ILB because many can see Poz going outside, but theres risk there obviously.

In the end it looks remote at this point for Curry to fall to 11, but its possible based on how things may fall.

Willis, Merriman, and Suggs are the guys that I think are studs in that group... The rest just arent studs to me yet.

All went top 15, and only Merriman went below 10 at 12.

Curry is the playmaker OLB in this bunch and probably the best LB period. If you want him, you go and move up if neccessary to get him... no more settling on a team that can manage to get beyond being average.

Everyone sees the guy as a star potential LB, you just make that move and do it. Will we? We probably amke a few calls and offer **** that wont get it done, but no we probably wont. Why not fill your talent with more of that lesser, mediocre talent, but hey... we will have lots of them when we keep all of our picks.

Just doesnt do it for me anymore, sorry.

If your going to get your best players, supposedly, through the draft then you ought to get the best damn ones possible and be willing to move up even into the early 1st to do it.

Terrell Suggs too but they have him listed as a LB.

Who can we possibly get in FA to play DE? No one lets these guys go anymore... Suggs will be franchised as will Peppers... who does that leave.

I would rather get a stud DE in the draft that will make our entire LB unit look good instead of one LB that can only do his job.

A good DE means our LBs cover for a shorter time, can blitz more effectively, and have an easier time knifing through in the run game. A good LB in a cover 2 is dependent on the DL.

Suggs has a deal with the Ravens that they will NOT franchise him this year.
