Overall:
Rey Maualuga may be one of the most feared LB in the entire country this season. He is a violent hitter and has a competitive fire that no matter what the score is, he is going to try and knock your block off on every play. However this gets Maualuga into trouble as he will become over aggressive and get beaten by a cut back run or go for a big hit on an opponent and miss an easy tackle. Nobody questions that Maualuga is the leader of the Trojan defense and he does that on game days both on the field with his play and off the field with his constant coaching of his teammates. Maualuga has great size but his athleticism is limited. While he was a decent cover LB in the Pac-10 against bigger stronger TE's and RB's in the NFL he will likely struggle, combine that with his shaky tackling technique and his inconsistent play and you have a guy in need of a very strict DC to start him off right. Maualuga is what I like to call a pile jumper. Don't get me wrong Rey makes a good number of plays on his own and he's always around the ball but he also will jump in on a play after its over and then appear to have had a hand in making the play when he really didnt. This has led to his being slightly overrated. He is without question though the top ILB in this class.

I think Rey belongs in the 3-4 as an ILB -- if we go LB I hope that we go after Brandon Spikes.

I would agree with you, he is really not at all well suited to be a 4-3 MLB.
