Although Marlin Briscoe (Denver) was the first African American QB to start in pro football, Harris was the first one to actually start in a team's opening game of the season.Buffalo Bills Now! and NFL Now! podcasts

Actually Fritz Pollard was...back in 1920 with the Akron Pros. Yes, it was the APFA, the predecessor to the NFL. However the APFA was pro football.
George Talliafero was the first NFL black QB...if you discount the APFA. 1950 with the NY Yanks.
I know the NFL loves to disregard stats and players from pre-merger though.
Sidenote on Briscoe...he actually became a Bill after his stint with Denver at QB, where we turned him into a WR.
