OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Recent history suggests that the Baltimore Ravens should not have invested a first-round draft choice on a quarterback. On opening day last season, for instance, 21 of the 32 starting NFL quarterbacks had been chosen after the first round. Eight, for a startling 25 percent, were either drafted on the eighth round or later or had signed as undrafted free agents.
"It's the most unique position in sports," said Ravens director of player personnel Phil Savage. "Real gray areas to get a handle on."
Added Coach Brian Billick: "It's a crapshoot."
