Wide-eyed rookies are in awe in first visit to Rams Park

He had just walked through the big, tinted-glass doors, under the fancy arch of blue and gold balloons, and suddenly the million-to-one dream didn't seem so farfetched anymore. Steve Battle stood in the middle of the three-story lobby of Rams Park late Thursday morning with the jaw-dropping, head-sweeping double take of a kid who simply could not believe his eyes.

The kid stared at the glimmering glass, wood and chrome that dominated the training facility's impressive foyer. And then Battle saw the silver Super Bowl trophy sitting behind the enormous glass case. He put his bags on the marble floor, took a deep breath and smiled.

"OK," he said. "I'm finally here."

You do not know Steve Battle. Of all the 83 men on the Rams' post-NFL draft roster, he might face the longest odds of making next fall's final regular-season roster. He is that against-all-odds rookie who has shown up at the Rams' rookie minicamp this weekend determined to beat impossible odds and fulfill his one-in-a-million dream.
