I wasn't impressed with the Centers at all.

When Mack of Cal & Unger of Oregon were bull rushed, they were pushed deep into the backfield like human blocking sleds. They take good angles but don't seem to have the strength to anchor against big guys. I could see a Vince Wilfolk type just running right over these guys.

Glad somebody else sees it. That is a pash rush drill they were doing and why I continue to say over and over again that while Mack's run blocking is great (when he gets to make the contact) his pass blocking need improvement (when the D makes the contact) and also why I think Unger translates better to OT, then OC.

Agreed. Those drills are my favorite and they show all the importance of sliding the feet, angles, anchoring etc. They leave little to the imagination.

• Southern Miss TE Shawn Nelson continues to turn heads. He isn't the biggest tight end and this type of forum plays very well to his skill set, but his tools are undeniable. He looks like a Dallas Clark-type prospect who can create a lot of schematic problems for an NFL defense if he ends up with a creative and innovative offensive coordinator at the next level. Nelson is a seam-stretching presence who is capable of plucking the ball outside his frame and presents a big target area for his quarterback. He covers a lot of ground and can run past linebackers in man coverage. More surprising, however, has been Nelson's effectiveness as a blocker -- particularly in pass pro. His lateral agility and ability to recover were on full display during the one-on-one drills. He also was able to drop his hips and handle the bull rush from the linebackers off the edge. Needless to say, Nelson is climbing up NFL draft boards this week.

I think Nelson is over looked and could be a good TE in Round 3 or 4. Very good ability, athletic and can block!

Caldwell of Alabama is showing me something at Center. He kicked out to G on the 1 on 1 and didn't pick up his feet. Saw a coach in his face and the 2nd time around, he stoned his man both times.

Under Center, he would get his hands on the big DT's and they were done. The only Center I saw who could anchor and not give ground.

Clint Sintim, the Virginia OLB is very quick. Seems to be 2 steps in the backfield before the OL gets out of their stance. Always blowing up plays in the backfield & bringing pressure on the QB. Needs to bend his knees a bit more but what an athlete. Instinctive & strong.

Out of Unger, Luigs, Mack, and Caldwell... Caldwell looked way better in this video. Mack got blown back, Unger played too high, Luigs got mauled and looked overmatched. Yet Caldwell stood strong and held his ground better.

At G, Green from Auburn looked good... Herman Johnson got blasted by Jerry.

Finally Connor Barwin is getting some DE drills at the Senior Bowl!

NFL | Barwin working with defense
Thu, 22 Jan 2009 13:40:24 -0800

Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports University of Cincinnati TE Connor Barwin did some drills Wednesday, Jan. 21, as a defensive lineman during Senior Bowl practice. He is being scouted for both positions, but many observers think he will end up as a defensive player because of his potential and skills as a pass rusher.

Keep in mind that drill favors the DL mightily. More than half the moves the DL were pulling in the drill couldn't be executed in a game w/out running into a guard

Wood is definitely handling Raji on these drives, when he plays guard or center! Digging it....

I'm a big fan of a guy like Wood who can handle a 3-4 nose on his own...and as the previous poster said, while Raji walking some of the Centers (Unger, Mack) into the backfield, they'd also have guard help against a monster like that.

That's something the DL would want to. The OG (except in a 3-4) scheme would be blocked up with somebody ideally so the DT would push to that direction. Some of the moves yes would of been neutralized but it is concerning to see how much ground was given up and questions have to be asked about their punch.

Eric Wood was Mike Mayock's top OC coming into this week, everybody said Mayock was nuts, last night he proved them all to be idiots and why Mayock is the best.

I've been a fan of his since he detailed why we'd take Whitner, when no one else knew who he was...and was right.

I love watching him break guys down with highlights and lo-lights, unlike McShay who jumps on whomever the hottest guy is at the moment...

Agreed Mayock is very good and is not afraid to point out flaws. He's mentioned a few times Mack has inconsistency in his pass blocking, something Ive also mentioned. He is who Mel Kiper was 10 years ago when he wasn't being muzzled by ESPN so much.
